Something amazing that I didn't know...

4-4-2 is a losing season. Winning percentage is wins divided by number of games played. A winning percentage of .400 is most definitely a losing season!

Actually the way they calculate winning percentage is a tie is half a win and half a loss. (4+.5+.5)/10 = 0.500

Neyland is credited with a winning percentage of 0.829, which is 173 wins + 12 ties/2 = 179/216

However, if ties are counted as losses, his winning percentage would only be 173/216 = 0.801

Bowden Wyatt had 2 losing seasons, the first of which was 1958. He went on to coach 4 more seasons. Johnny Majors had 3 losing seasons and was not fired after any of them.

Neyland had back to back non-winning seasons in 1947 (5-5) and 1948 (4-4-2). Good thing he was not fired. 2 years after that 4-win season, Neyland led the Vols to 2 national titles (1 consensus) 11-1 (1950) and 10-1 (1951 consensus).

I love it when allvol gets going...

you also have to take in account that for 2yrs during the second world war we didnt have enough men to field a team because they were off killing japs an germans. besides army and navy who else can claim that????

I would think that colleges all over the country were faced with the same problem. Neyland led the Vols to a 9-2 record in 1946 just prior to the 2 non-winning seasons.

Even Bear Bryant had 2 less than stellar seasons in 1969 (6-5) and 1970 (6-5-1). He then preceded to dominate the SEC for a decade and win multiple national titles.

dont think so. you could check other schools out during that time period though. tennessee was one of the few.

Alabama did not field a team in 1943.
Auburn did not field a team in 1943.

The first 2 I checked did not field an official team the same season that UT did not. What's the point of your original post? Even the school's that did field teams were not at full strength. The talent level was comparative across the nation. Tennessee was 7-1-1 in 1944, the year after not fielding an official team. I'm not sure how not having an official team in 1943 affects the 1947-48 seasons?

Right...and Audie Murphy would have won a National Championship and Heisman if he had gone to Texas instead of going to fight in Europe.

This might just be the most ridiculous post I have witnessed on here. UT was apparently the only college affected by WWII.

She's new, and brave enough to move beyond just reading into offering a post or two.
Cut her some slack Real....

sorry that you took what i said the wrong way. didnt mean to imply that ut football was unfairly affected by WWII. i thought the thread was about win-loss records since the 20's. sure dont have to worry about shutting football down for this war, now do we???most americans today want to be patriotic in words only. feel like i can say that since so many of us have VOLUNTEERED for military service through the years

Melissa, don't take it personal on this site. There are so many negavols that some will jump at any chance to blast another poster. And heaven forbid that you actually say anything nice about UT because they will come out of the woodwork. They are in the minority but they are vocal in their disdain for anything positive about UT.

What did he say that was negative about UT? How has anyone that insults another poster automatically become classified a negavol?

I think you mean't "that WAS" negative about UT, but I know what your intention was.

For what it's worth, i wouldn't classify therealUT as a "negavol" but I think that since attacking mercilously anyone that shows positives towards the Vols is thier main tennant, that he was easily confused for one when he disagreed with the new girl.
