An actor by the name of Eric Stolz was originally cast as Marty McFly but was fired half way through filming and they decided to cast Michael J. Fox.

I think they made the right decision. MJF went on to be one of the biggest stars of the 80s and 90s and Eric Stoltz did this.....

PS Anybody know why he was fired from BTTF?

It wasn't firing really. Michael j fox was always the guy they wanted just scheduling stuff that ended up getting cleared up.

Yup, this. The producers of Family Ties were total pricks and would not free up any time with Fox's availability per his contractual obligations to filming schedules. Thus, Fox would shoot Family Ties during the day and showed up at night to do scenes for the movie.

Even though Stolz was fired half way through filming he got paid the same that Fox got.
