Another well known movie character that could have been played by someone else was John Coffey, played by Michael C. Duncan in The Green Mile (another Hanks classic). The role was originally offered to Dave Chappelle but he rejected the part due to the way it protrayed the black man as a superhuman miracle or whatever he said about it. I guess that didn't kill him too much. Went on to make millions from his show and stand up specials.
