Since we have all these threads about improvements to crowd noise, chants etc.., what's the word on Neyland's sound system, has it been revamped yet? Tuscaloosa has an incredible PA, able to even play music that sounds decent in the stadium, South Carolina likewise, where we still have the 1950's echo sound, where you have no idea what they even said half the time....love the improvements to stadium, but when are we going to get a sound system to match the new digs?

When you see some of the other new stadiums in SEC, a great PA with the right music REALLLY REALLY pumps up the crowd and especially the students.

They did add a ton of subs a few years ago. Those new speakers echo a ton. It's not just a sound and speaker issue being too old. The acoustics in the stadium causes the echo even more. Since Neyland's seating is steeper than almost every stadium and has no openings, it creates a lot of walls to bounce off of. They would need a sound engineer to figure out where to place the speakers and possibly acoustical tiles of some sort or something to dampen the echo.

Plus, those same acoustics is one reason that Neyland is so loud with unamplified crowd noise. It was probably designed that way.

Couldn't agree more about pumping the music in. The traditionalists will not like it, but it gets the crowd going. The band is great, but we need the music from time to time.

Personally I hate when they play the band over the PA system because it echoes and sounds terrible. The band is plenty loud enough

The sound and speaker system was completely redone in 2011. Like others posted, the echo is a result of the stadium's acoustics, not the speakers.

Did they not take that into consideration or did they simply slap some new speakers up?

Alright then lets use the speakers we got, and start to play more music to get the crowd hyped. Look I hate Alabama, but I have been to a number of their games....and I have to say when the ACDC starts pumping and the elephants start rampaging on the screen that crowd is just hyped! It's a really good show. I would like to see more of that. Don't get me wrong I don't want us to lose our country side completely, but we could use a little injection of testosterone inspired music... wether it's metal (my pref), hip hop, techno.....we need to get the kids and recruits awake and excited.

Lets please get rid of our country side.

system is Bobby Frigging Denton!! What an embarrasment....It's like he walks in with no preparation..not only does he mispronounce oppenents names, but our players also. Has for years....I keep thinking he will retire, but to no avail. Season ticket holder since 1984, and he gets worse by the hour.

My latest complaint is how it sounds like he is saying Jacka** Smith on the tackle...

Having the band play some peppier songs would be a fine start. Instead of whatever that funeral dirge is that a few people slowly shake their Pom Poms to
Pipes in music will not get the crowd any more hyped than Rocky Top does -- they just need a few more peppy songs or short bursts in their arsenal (like Joe UGA would play the chrorus of Bad Leroy Brown to fire up their junkyard dog defense on 3rd downs and the crowd would get loud)

Thank god someone else noticed. When RockyTop is played over the PA the whole stadium gets out of sync and it sounds stupid. Also, is there a contract with Kenny Chesney that we are required to play at least one of his terrible songs per game? When they play old school hip hop like "Jump Around" or "Let Me Clear My Throat" Neyland picks up, even when there are only 40000 fans in attendance like the past few years.

HAHAHA. Yea, I could do without the Kenny. I recall a picture of him wearing an alabama hat or texas hat. I cant remember. Lost all respect after that.

The echo is terrible though. We can hear Rocky Top just fine, dont ruin it with the delay.

My father actually installed all the speakers in Neyland back in 1996. He was at every home game from 96-06 I believe. Before 911, we had all access passes and parked under the stadium. This is how I became such a big UT fan. I was in the press box, same room, 8 feet away from John Ward numerous times during games. I got on the field for some games to take the refs their stuff. My favorite moments are seeing Peyton and Archie and getting a signed football. And also the time I was on the sidelines and "that cheeesssee" came right in front of me and put his helmet down on an equipment rack and I reached out and touched it. Mind you I was probably 10 at the time, but it was awesome.

About the speakers, these guys are right about the acoustics of the stadium causing the echo. You would need a lot of absorbent materials in their to help with that, including people. I was unaware of the sound system being redone recently. I hope it crashes so we could get a call again! :)

And one more thing, Butch gets it!

As a former Pride member and someone that sits in X5 row 7. I can assure you that the speaker system is responsible for a lot of the echo. The phasing is so bad from the distance that it must travel from the band to me (opposite corner of the the band's corner) combined with an electronic (fast) reproduction to the speakers make it sound like a fugue. Other than what I've seen on the field, this is my worst experience at Neyland. The problem isn't a matter of acoustics, rather distance. I can't imagine a sound company would not know how to fix the phasing issues by using a delay in the sound processing.

I should add that the speakers I'm talking about are the ones that sit on the ground level near the cheerleaders, not the ones high above the seating.

I've got it!

Since the stadium can't seem to handle noise from inside the stadium, why not have a floating, power controlled unit floating above the stadium that sent the sound down into the stadium from above? Kind of like what you see at the basketball arena but above the stadium.

Yes, I'm already hittiing the sauce on Friday! :)
