South Carolina Fans Already Overboard

I've always enjoyed going to games there. Nice stadium and very easy to get in and out of . . . which is a really good feature since SC fans have a habit of bolting for the exits in the 3rd quarter.

I think that fans that may really be scared are Georgia fans. Even as Spurrier was losing 9 games in his final 3 season at Florida... he was still beating the Dawgs. Very similar to their games w/ Tennessee.... South Carolina plays Georgia very close. Spurrier could make the difference.

2004 Georgia 20, South Carolina 16
2003 Georgia 31, South Carolina 7
2002 Georgia 13, South Carolina 7
2001 South Carolina 14, Georgia 9
2000 South Carolina 21, Georgia 10

Probably the biggest hurdle for Lou Holtz while at South Carolina was the final 3 games of each season: Tennessee, Florida, and Clemson

2000
Record leading up to Tennessee game: 7-1
Results:
Tennessee L 14-17
@ Florida L 21-41
@ Clemson L 14-16
>>>finished 8-4

2001
Record leading up to Tennessee game: 7-1
Results:
@ Tennessee L 10-17
Florida L 17-54
Clemson W 20-15
>>>finished 9-3

2002
Record leading up to Tennessee game: 5-3
Results:
Tennessee L 10-18
@ Florida L 7-28
@ Clemson L 20-27
>>>finished 5-7

In 2003, the SEC moved re-arranged the schedule so that SC no longer finishes the season with Tenn, Fla, and Clemson.
Tennessee beat SC in overtime, 23-20, in September.
Their final 2 games:
Florida L 22-24
Clemson L 17-63
>>>finished 5-7

In 2004, SC is 6-4 with 2 losses already occurring to Tennessee and Florida.
Tennessee L 29-43
@ Florida L 14-48

Clemson had been mediocre recently and Spurrier has the ability to make sure that his teams don't lose to unranked opponents. He also does not lose at home very much. So taking that into account, he could very easily make this kind of difference.... however, no NC aspirations but in the SEC East mix.

2000 8-4 >> 10-2
2001 9-3 >> 10-2
2002 5-7 >> 8-4*
2003 5-7 >> 7-5
2004 6-4 >> 8-2*

*includes at least one loss at home.

I believe Spurrier is a bad match for SC. Why didn't Florida or Miami take him? I think he has too much baggage and he really doesn't have anything else to prove in college football. It's well known that he likes golf more than recruiting and I really don't see him having the organizational skills or the reputation to pull together a great staff in the piedmont of SC. He is known for his autocratic style and excentric ways and I just don't see that working in an area where people still say "C'mone in, take your shoes off, Moma will fix you some supper!" It looks to me that the Holtz kids found a wild bull in the woods and thier asking thier Pappy if they can keep him in the barn for awhile. Pappy says "OK" but he keeps one hand on Ole Betsey knowing that if the barn starts to fall down, they will be eat'n steak in the morning. It also appears that Holtz needs Spurrier now more than SC needs Spurrier for the future. The AD job is up and I hear Holtz is in line for for it. That's the job he was born to fill anyway. He has always been more of an influencer with other influencers than with the football rank and file. He needs a big name now so that he can eat steak until he finds a real replacement for himself. For his sake tho, I hope he doesn't get egg on his face because just not any Cock will do, especially if it has horns and has knocked your house down. My prediction: Spurrier gone within three years.

You seem to have some idea that SC is located in the sticks. Columbia is a heck of a lot more cosmopolitan than Gainesville is.

And I can guarantee you that SC is not looking to hire a 67 year old athletic director. Holtz is going to retire and take care of his wife . . . but I do agree with you that Spurrier's stay in Columbia will probably be no more than 3 or 4 years.

So, why do you think SC picked Spurrier. Why not a national search for someone like Urban Meyer. Perhaps they did, but it doesn't look like they did..Why the impatience on thier part. Would Holtz's wife's illness cause them to be so hasty?

This only makes sense if they bring in an assistant to groom as Spurrier's protege (Steve Spurrier, Jr. is coming from East Carolina to be on the staff.)

The impatience comes from the fact that it's not too often that a place like SC gets a shot at a coach of this caliber. Remember, this is the job that was once held by the likes of Brad Scott and Sparky Woods.

Just like Sportscenter said, "I don't believe South Carolina has ever been our lead story?"..... SC would have a hard time finding a younger talented top notch coach... especially with the Florida job opening. I think they saw this as an opportunity to get one of the SEC best coaches of all-time. I don't like Spurrier, but his record speaks for itself.

So, With SC and Fla sucking up all the air in the SEC this coming year, how do you think it will affect our recruiting. Prior to this it looked like TN was going to be in the catbird seat. I think it's great for the SEC but I don't think it's whats best for TN.

With so little in state talent - by now, I think we're pretty much used to the dogfight of recruiting.

Now if I were Clemson - I'd be quaking in my boots especially if they lose to SC Saturday.

The question now is will the SC fans become more annoying then the Florida fans were in the 90's.
