I wonder if they plan to continue the Deep Space Gateway plans with sorties to lunar surface, or if the focus will shift to solely lunar surface missions?

Lots of tech to test before we attempt Mars, so this is a good step to test things away from Earth orbit.

It is addressed in the article:

NASA recently announced that for human astronauts, the path to Mars will include a stop at the moon, where the agency may build a facility currently being called the Deep Space Gateway. That structure could serve as a kind of way station between the Earth and the Red Planet.

May build doesn't mean it happens, but the idea is still there.

I'm for space exploration.

My guess is Trump can't name all the planets in our solar system. And his plan is to borrow $800 trillion from Russian mobsters to build a hotel on the moon, with his name on it, then default.

Can you name all the planets in our solar system?

Oh and pluto is still a planet. It was a planet when i was in school, and I am pretty sure pluto hasn't changed.

He's a lawyer, it's their nature to try and reach around their ass to scratch their elbow.

just reminding everyone that McDad and 72 don't have the market cornered on cheap humor.

Space X, Blue Origin, etc. I like the private and government approach. It allows for NASA to work on the "big" stuff while letting other companies worry about low Earth orbit.

I'm not so sure it shouldn't be the other way around.

yup, that anything gets done at all is amazing.

It really does blow my mind to watch govt workers. Ever seen a city crew replace a sidewalk section? 3ftx3ft. Could pour, finish and clean up by myself in a couple hours. 5 man crew, 10 hour day...4 guys watch the new guy do the job. Dead serious. Tax dollars hard at work. Translate that to literally every other task performed by city, state, and feds. Thats why we are screwed.

Yup. glad we don't have unions because it is the same.

My uncle worked for NASA and then later a NASA contractor. They weren't allowed to directly contact other people working on the project. they had to call their handler, explain what was needed (way over their head) that handler then had to request permission to talk to the other companies handler, who was told by the first handler what my uncle wanted. that equally intelligent handler then passed on the information to the second company. but often didn't know who to contact or wouldn't go through the effort of making sure the info got to the correct person. Uncle told me that they often reverted to snail mail (allowed) because it was a more efficient means of communication.

he said most of NASA under some of the administrations had become box checkers who had no real clue about space, engineering or anything to do with the business side of things. they were just there to collect pay checks and complicate his life.

My uncle did end up getting a Silver Snoopy Award, which was a pretty dang big deal for him.
