Spike Rule

I was watching the replay of the game and the announcers were talking about a new rule that you can't spike the ball if there are under three seconds on the play clock. Does anyone know anything about this? I'm not sure if it applies to a running play clock, stopped one, or both. We had three seconds left when Worley spiked it. :good!:

My understanding is that if you're UT and you spike the ball you lose. We got away with one imo

What about 11 seconds?

Only 10 seconds can be run off the clock on a penalty. That leaves 1 sec left

Lets say you false start and hike the ball at 11 seconds on the clock. Even if they assess the 10sec penalty, such that you have 1sec left on the clock, won't the clock start as soon as the ball is set since it was moving before the penalty was assessed? Therefore that 1sec is gonna tick off before the official can get clear and the kicking team can kick the ball.

We dodged a bullet. An O-lineman gets antsy and jumps offside and we lose that game. The meltdown on Volnation would've been epic...

It was very intense watching the O-line just sit in their stance. I was hoping that no one had to sneeze or flinch, or whatever in those last seconds.

Another point is that if Tennessee had committed a penalty on the spike (ie false start) then there would have been a 10 second run off and the game would have been over.

You are correct, unless the offense has a timeout left and the penalty occurs, then the offense can use the timeout to 'buy' the time on the clock.

The way the last few years have gone, I was expecting it. That kick was a miracle.

On this sort of note.....

Did anyone else pause for a few seconds after the field goal went thru just to make sure we had actually won? To many bad last second debacles over the past few years made me hesitate!!!

GO VOLS!

I didn't start celebrating until about 15 minutes after the game was over. I jumped up and down like crazy after the initial end of the LSU game in 2010. I wasn't about to put myself through that same kind of pain again.
