I thought the ending of the movie was terrible..... in the best possible way. It was tragic that he offed everyone only to be saved a few moments later. had they all been saved happily ever after the movie would have been a forgettable paint by numbers horror flick.

Exactly why this ending is fantastic. It actualy makes you think and its all you can talk about when you walk out.

I can't make any sense of the cult analogy at all. If you want a real world example look at people making the decision to jump from a building rather than burn.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/sept11/2002-09-02-jumper_x.htm

It's intrinsic to "twist" or "gut punch" endings to be divisive. If this ending didn't work for you so be it but it's strange how detached you are from the what and why behind it and how it isn't nearly as unrealistic as you make it out to be.

And there are LOTS of people that disagree with your take. Here's yet another link (did you even read the first?) discussing the matter and happens to mention that Stephen King himself loved the ending which was different than what he'd wrote.

Stephen King has a bad habit of writing great novels only to screw them up completely with bad endings(ex:Under The Dome, The Stand, IT) so that's not saying a lot. Frank Darabont actually managed to screw it up more than Stephen King ever could have.

The ending of the movie should prove to you how stupid and premature his actions were. Here is a pro tip for you in case you missed it: If you are going to "euthanize" everyone in your car including your own son whilst trapped in the Mist then at least wait until some imminent danger has presented itself before actually pulling the trigger. Blaring Smash Mouth - All Stars really slammed home that point.

They established imminent threat the previous two hours of the movie. When they ran out of gas after driving for hours and no day light in sight it seemed all hop was lost.

The ending didn't work for you, so be it. Most would point to the ending being the best part of the movie.

The whole point is the hopelessness they all felt based on the events of the movie up until then. I feel like you have missed the point of not just the ending but the entire movie.

I have no problem with you not "getting" that ending. From the moment they came up with it there was zero, zilch, not a chance in hell it was going to be universally liked. In fact I'm certain they were counting on that being the case and as others have mentioned that controversy is the primary reason it's still remembered and discussed.

Setting "liking" it aside I continue to be a bit surprised at, given the totality of the movie leading up to that ending, you seem so at ease with apparently dismissing the premise of what happened entirely.

It's all good...people like what they like.

Danger was developed through the whole movie, yes. However there was no imminent danger presented at the time he just decided to pull the trigger.

If the point was hopelessness then they should have had him shoot everyone in the truck, and then have him be eaten by something. However, the director chose to put the huge twist on the ending and have the army come through clearing the Mist. The message ultimately was, "Gotcha sucker! You just shot 3 adults and your own son, now you get to live with that."

Horrible ending, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

You got to see a little bit more Mist action in this latest episode but I feel like it's moving a little slow. I want more.
