I did not hear Griffith this morning but apparently he said that this year's recruiting class sucks......

While I tend to agree, did anyone hear this and if so could you give me some more details?

I heard his segment but I did not hear him comment about the recruiting class.

I know a lot of guys are committing early, but isn't it a little premature to start making much of an assessment on recruiting classes?

Yes, he said it. And, yes, it's awfully early to make comments like that (if they should be made AT ALL), especially considering that the Vols tend to be a "late bloomer" in the recruiting game.

IMO, Gif is much more informed about recruiting and where it is headed than the majority on this board. The bottom line is that if the Vols dont do soemthing this year the recruiting will not get better.

and the same people that are saying we are late bloomers said that last year and last years class was subpar to say the least.........

Mike G. make inflammitory comments all the time. That is his thing and that is what keeps him in the buisness. This years class is definately lacking in that major star power but if we have a good season, we will get better players. I am sure there are some diamonds in the ruff out there.

No doubt about that . . . and I've always thought Griff did a good job. Just saying there's a long way to go.

Yes, it was, and that was largely due to the poor season. We didn't get some of the late-deciding prospects because of an abyssmal final record, a late loss to Vandy, and sitting at home during Bowl week.

we're hurting and the only way to stop the bleeding is to stomp Cal right off the top and generate so momentum

I honestly don't see what the big fuss is at this point. If we're doing poorly in recruiting in February, then I'll start to worry, but hey, it's freakin August.

Right now, like most teams, we're getting a bunch of in-talent. Just like Florida, Texas, USC, etc. The big difference is that those teams are in states that have much better talent than Tennessee even in our best year.

Early in the recruiting season, you build up on in-state talent to have a good base for your class and then you go out and get the big time out of state recruits. Tennessee is already at a disadvantage by having to get more talented out of state guys and add to that the fact that we just went 5-6. We're just not going to have a bunch of 5 and 4 star guys this early in the season.

evryone wants to point out that we are "late bloomers" that we do well at the end, but the reality is that recruits are trending toward earlier commits. IMO we're rapidly falling behind. For a coach that relies almost solely on talent to win that puts us in bad shape

Well I bet that makes the guys who have committed feel really special. Always great to have the KNS mouth-pieces keep UT on top. Why would he spout this kind of crap?? It does no good, none!

Also, doesn't anyone remember all the commits across the country who changed their minds as signing day got closer? Amazing that we put so much stock in a non-binding statement that was released to get a 17-year-old kid some pub.

I've read it suggested that the staff is worrying more about establishing lifelines for new jobs after this season than they are about going head-to-head to get commitments. I'm tempted to beleive it.

I would guess he said it because he was asked his opinion. Last time I looked, UT doesn't write Mike Griffith's check. I love how people jump on anyone in the Knoxville media who doesn't practice the mouth breathing, mindless, suck up journalism practiced by John Wilkerson, Jimmy Hyams, Dave Hooker, and Brent Hubbs.

"you are the weakest link"

I really do not care how they feel. A number of them should be ecstatic that they got an offer from UT due to its rich tradition. But then again an offer from the Vols does not mean what it used to mean. Another recruiting year like last year will really hurt the program.

People want to spout off on this board things like who needs 4 and 5 star players because it is just a ranking and we need in state kids because of tradition and they will perhaps be more dedicated to Tennessee. The fact is

Tennessee has had major problems developing whatever talent they had....Having a class full of average players will not help that. One east tennessee signee just got himself in a world of trouble and got kicked off the team.

I bring that up to say that kids are kids and they make mistakes. It will continue but an instate signee is not really any different that a signee from another state.

So you're saying that a 4 or 5 star recruit that hears that and de-commits is OK? If the crap he says causes us to lose players that can contribute then he is an idiot. Period.

Do you know every person who was listening? He just insulted a group of guys that are coming to play at UT, whether you like it or not.

I can't see how insulting future players ever helps. Please explain.

First, Hooker and Hubbs are ass-clowns too, the others I ignore.

Second, maybe UT doesn't write his check but they make him a living. When he starts taking shots at future players, ones who have never even stepped on the field, then I will say he's out of line. (wrote the rest in previous)

I didn't hear what he said but if he just mentioned the recruiting class not being very good at this point, I don't think that's out of line. I think anyone that follows recruiting would agree that we lack any big name players. The class is obviously not finished yet though.

I don't really view that as a taking shots at players but like I said, I didn't hear it.

Maybe not, but I took my version off the first couple of posts. (could be my error) I would rather hear it described as "disappointing so far" rather than saying it was poor. Also the previous posters seemed to back his ability to say whatever he wanted about it since he isn't paid by UT. I really disagree w/ that.

I know what you are saying. I need to find out what he said.

I doubt that a kid is going to decommit just because some newspaper writer says the class is poor. But I do think that the new earring policy by coach Cut could possibly hurt recruiting, but hopefully I'm wrong and I could be.
