Maybe not, but I took my version off the first couple of posts. (could be my error) I would rather hear it described as "disappointing so far" rather than saying it was poor. Also the previous posters seemed to back his ability to say whatever he wanted about it since he isn't paid by UT. I really disagree w/ that.

How can you disagree with that?! As hat said, Mike Griffith doesn't work for the University. He works for KNS and is paid for his commentary and reporting. He was also asked by a radio station not directly affiliated to the Univ. of Tennessee about his thoughts on the recruiting class. He gave his opinion. I would respect him far less if he said something just to appease the university.

As for the semantics part of it: its difficult sometimes to find the PERFECT words on live radio.

Very easy to disagree with. As I stated before, he makes his living from UT sports. Maybe he's not directly paid by UT but they are almost a co-signer.

When (or if) his opinions about 17-year-old young men who pick to come to UT start affecting the quality of UT football, I feel he is out of line. I respect him less if he takes shots at minors but each his own. But I guess it's all OK in the name of journalism excellence that is the KNS.

Maybe to find the perfect words, don't put a writer on radio. Not enough time to edit an answer.

And I really may puke if I see you quote hat as your source again. Please come with your own opinions if you want to quote me. :disappointed:

Dude, seriously? Hat was used as REFERENCE. I have loads of my own ideas, as you can tell from THIS FORUM and the articles posted on the main site. It just so happens hat's words were very well said.

And I feel you're way off base. Griffith is employed by the KNS writing about sports, mostly UT. His job status does NOT depend on the state of UT football. Because of the passion, tradition, etc, UT football will always be the main topic. I highly doubt Griffith personally attacked any of the kids, but I also have not heard it. It would be out of character for him (at least his writing/public character).

I can't stress enough how off base I think you are. Griffith was asked his opinion, which he gave. When a person purposely hides their opinions, feelings, etc, they become less of a person. You know the idea to stand by your convictions? This applies here.

I have not read your articles because I have read your posts. That is where I formed my opinion.

Do you really think Griff would be writing for the KNS if Knoxville had no UT sports? No, so he earns his living off of UT. I never said paid by UT, I said off of UT. While he doesn't have to write great things about UT, it would be nice if he did not hurt them in the process. (See John Adams for an example, he bashes but does not hurt)

You state I'm off base (twice) but also claim to not have heard it. How can you be doubly sure of that? do you know him directly? He may not have personally attacked them but what good does it do to bad-mouth young men who have signed w/ UT? Is that really off base? I got my interpretation from the posters who heard it and it didn't sound positive.

IMO Griffith has been the biggest HOMER at KNS for the last few years. Why was he pulled off of the football beat? Does anyone have in info?

By that logic, someone who makes their living covering politics should never criticize elected officials. Without the people in office, they wouldn't have anything to write about. If our coaches have become such pathetic recruiters that the words of a newspaper columnist will override what they tell a player, it's time to gas the whole lot of them.

We are in a huge debate right now in this country about that very thing. Is it ok to report if it harms? I say it's not and people disagree, that's the USA for ya.

I'm not saying they're weak recruiters but why does a "journalist" feel it's ok to bash these guys? Personally, I think the whole sports section at the KNS should be made of Charmin.

It's not bashing if you're telling the truth.

If he is such a superb eval. of talent then why does Hooker do recruiting? For that matter, why has he not been snatched up by the recruiting services?

I will trust a Chavis, Fulmer, Cutcliffe or Taylor before I trust Griff for my info on the talent of recruits in the next class.

They were certainly dead on about our Rose Bowl talent last year.

I believe they were but their self-evaluation may have fallen a bit short.

Losses to Vandy and SC, and the poor special teams play lead me to believe otherwise.

If you can say (with a straight face) that Vandy and SC were more TALENTED than UT then I believe you've lost it.

A team with Rose Bowl talent beats Vandy and SC with no problem.

I have another proposition on the subject. Griff has been a lapdog for CPF and crew as long as he has been at KNS. Perhaps he is just parroting what he is hearing from the people around the program. That is his typical role. After all the coaches would never be able to directly say what Griff said.

Perhaps this is the buzz with those in the know.....

A team with Liberty Bowl talent disposes of Vanderbilt and South Carolina with ease.

If you can say with a straight face that UT had comparable talent to Southern Cal and Texas, then I know you've lost it.

I agree with you here. We had more athletic talent than those schools, but for various reasons, UT did not play to the potential.
