*Justin Worley took the first-team reps at quarterback during a period where the 11-man offense drives down the field on air to improve on its tempo and pace. Marlin Lane was the tailback with the first group, and the receivers were Marquez North, Jason Croom and junior college transfer Von Pearson, who is working in the slot spot in the absence of Pig Howard.
*Quarterback Riley Ferguson redshirted last season largely because of a fractured tibia suffered in mid-season, and he still has a sleeve on his right lower leg. He even pulled out of a drill momentarily favoring that leg.
The first team nickel defense lined up this way: up front Corey Vereen, Owen Williams, Danny O'Brien, Jordan Williams; at linebacker it was A.J Johnson and Curt Maggitt. And the five defensive backs were Cam Sutton and Malik Foreman at cornerback, Justin Coleman at the nickel, and at safety it was Lemond Johnson and Devaun Swafford.
Marquez North looked like a fourth-year player in many regards from a physical appearance, while it was obvious that both Riley Ferguson and Josh Dobbs had added weight --- particularly Dobbs. Marlin Lane also was physically bigger.
Curt Maggitt was on the practice field and going through drills without a brace, instead wearing a light wrap below his knee. Riyahd Jones practiced with a sleeve on his right leg after working through a nagging calf injury last season.
Later Azzanni put tennis balls in each hand of kick and punt returners Malone, North, Pearson, Jones, Lane, Cam Sutton, Malik Foreman, Cody Blanc while waving a towel in their face with the ball in the air.
worley after practice: Great first day or practice. Light years ahead of where we were last year. Von and josh picked it up very well
worley: The thumb has come along.
ferguson: I'm just trying to get better every day. We ell each other out.
ferguson: I had command of the playbook halfway through last season.
