Spurrier Threatens to leave South Carolina

There are so many interesting issues tied up in that story. The NCAA clearinghouse versus a university's own admisison standards, how much a coach can control the administration, the coach having to renege on promises to two players, etc.

Steve had things like that to worry about at Florida too.... I remember a really good LB that signed with Florida but wound up at Oklahoma for Stoops (Lance ???)....It makes you wonder if something else isn't bothering him about his new job....like his third rate facilities and inevitable fourth place SEC East finishes.

Off topic, but I think Spurrier was dead serious with the championship talk at SC this year. The timing of this game isn't good either, right after Alabama.

IIRC, UT will be their 9th straight game. Thats a lot of football without a week off so there could be issues. After bammer is a tough week though.

Maybe spurrier needs to work on recruiting a higher caliber of student athlete. If you can't qualify at South Carolina where can you qualify exactly?

Droski, I think his point is that if a kid can get by the requirements of the NCAA then he ought to be able to get in at SoCar if Spurrier wants him in.

Minimum NCAA requirements tell you nothing as to whether the kid has any chance of graduating. There isn't a single pac-10 team that doesn't have higher standards than the ncaa minimum requirements.

I bet they have already changed their policy. If SC loses Steve then it will set them back 15 to 20 years.

I think it is more about the sort of damage to his credibility with recruits, and also (I begrudgingly speculate) about just being honorable and fair to these young men. I mean, if you recruit someone, convince them to trust you to maximize their athletic and educational potential over the next 5 years, and then have to tell them "oops, nevermind" when they help up their end of the bargain... That's crappy, and that's what Spurrier is saying. It's not fair to them. If they weren't good enough to get into South Carolina, that should have been made clear to Spurrier and the recruits as at least a possibility a long time ago. It seems like this was a surprise that the NCAA standards weren't good enough to Spurrier.

If you were a 4 start player choosing between South Carolina and a few other schools, and Spurrier came to you and said "I'll give you a full ride, contingent on you getting in but you won't know until August" what would you do?

There are plenty of guys who don't qualify because they (the kids) didn't put in the work or effort to get in their core classes before showing up at college. The article doesn't detail what happened. If it was really a situation of spurrier saying "you are 100% ready to go" and SC changing it's mind than I agree that sucks.

yea i dont think this is funny because its really not fair to the two players, and im glad to see Spurrier defend those guys and go as far as threatening to leave

I don't doubt that Mr. Spurrier is miffed at having to break his word. But this is why he spoke out in public...
After Bowman was denied admission last month, the athletics director at his high school, Fred Davis, told a North Carolina newspaper that Bowman was a victim of the Gamecocks’ oversigning during recruiting season. USC’s top-10 recruiting class included 32 players — five more than the Gamecocks were able to bring in this year under NCAA rules.

Anything that can be used against you in the recruiting process must be dealt with. Swiftly.

“There’s a perception out there that South Carolina oversigned and they’re just getting rid of guys. And that’s not true. That’s not true on our coaching staff,” Spurrier said. “We had a plan in place to grayshirt if they all qualified. And we were going to do that. As it turned out, we’re not going to have to do that right now.”

Nip it.

what does the president think he's running? a college? nosiree, its a farm team for the n.f.l., pure and simple. this is the s.e.c.! seriously, no one's ever accused spurrier of being stupid. he knew what his perameters were. if the requirements exceeded those of the ncaa, i salute the U.S.C.
