Spurrier Threatens to leave South Carolina

Urban Meyer is a better football coach than Spurrier. In fact I would say he is the 2nd best coach in the country, behind Saban.

Backwards? I'll remember that when he has a winning record against Meyer.

As a gameday coach, Spurrier might be a little ahead. In terms of offensive ingenuity, I'm sorry but Meyer is as good as Spurrier. And Spurrier is bored with recruiting. He does not put in nearly the effort that Meyer does, personally.

he does not need to put in the effort Meyer does in recruiting. He can beat him with lesser players.

Why doesn't GAMECOCKS=BEASTS reply to this thread?

If he wants to ridicule our wide stripe, he should be able to comment on his head coach being angry with University administration.

Until meyer produces a top-10 offense with florida, i have to give the nod to spurrier. Though I agree that spurrier doesn't seem to have the same drive he did 15 years ago.

If he were to leave SC then UT needs to be all over him...chances to land a coach like him don't come around often.

Meyer won at BG & Utah, but SOS won at Duke...SOS wins that head to head

Doubt it. He could pwn the SEC the way Spurrier used to, but until he does, SOS = teh winnar.

At least Duke is in a major population center in North Carolina. Do you have any idea how hard it is to actually get people to move to places like Utah and northern Ohio?

As far as recruiting standards... There's nothing I hate more than schools granting "special admissions" to football players. IMO if somebody wants to play football for a college, they better be as qualified as any other student getting in. Of course, Stanford ended up where they are because of enforcing academic standards on football players.

As a long suffering Carolina fan, this is just one snafu in a long line of foul up's. I remember back when we turned down a Liberty Bowl invitation because it was around exam time. Are you kiiding me?! When you haven't had many bowl trips in your history, I don't think it's a good idea to turn down a bowl, even if it is the Liberty.

Now we have a proven coach who wants to compete for the conference title, tons of financial support from fans and appear to finally be headed in the right direction. If the administration at South Carolina runs off Steve Spurrier, I will lead a band of rebels to the president's front porch and start a bonfire with my diploma!

Here's the response of USC's officials that were responsible for denying admission to the players.

The State | 08/07/2007 | Officials defend admissions decision

If you are going to deny admission to a kid, don't you think that 2 days prior to the day he reports is a little late in the process? What the heck are these guys doing all summer such that a timely decision regarding a student-athlete's education can't be made? At least Clemson let the kid they denied know the facts back around Signing Day!

Egg, meet face.

Here are the long-term issues from SOS' perspective:

This does not tarnish the relationship,” said Fred Davis, athletics director at Anson County High, where Bowman played. “It might hurt the university in the state of North Carolina as far as recruiting, when you offer one of the state’s top athletes and all of a sudden he’s denied (after) he’s met NCAA Clearinghouse eligibility.”
Davis still questions whether the decision on Bowman was motivated by the Gamecocks’ oversigning during recruiting season. USC’s top-10 class included 32 players — five more than it could bring in this year under NCAA rules.
“I will always wonder,” he said. “Not knocking anyone. I think with coach Spurrier apologizing, he has brought closure to the situation.”
