Awhile back, it was thought that Halvorsen and Tidwell would return around the same time. So I would think Seth is due to return shortly. Any reports on his ETA?

I had a thought relating to this board’s frequent conversations about how to use this embarrassment of weekend arms when Tidwell and Halvorsen are healthy (remember, Halvorsen was Missouri’s Friday night starter last year). Corbin, in the past, has “stacked” weekend arms/innings because he had so many good ones. Meaning, he uses two starters for one game. Basically, you start one guy, pitch him 5 innings, then bring in another and let him pitch 4 innings. Don’t even use the bullpen until Sunday unless one guy has a bad game. Imagine the following pitching 5 innings/4 innings:

Friday: Burns/Tidwell
Saturday: Dollander/Halvorsen
Sunday: Beam/bullpen

So by the time you get to Sunday, the entire bullpen is fresh. You can pitch Beam like normal, then have Kirby, Joyce, Mabry, Sewell, etc. all available.

I think this would be a great approach. And come tournament time, you have 5 guys (6 counting Secrest) who are stretched out and ready to start.

It’s an interesting idea but I’m not sure it works with our rotation. The issue is that some of those relievers are a lot like the starters. If you go that route, you’re piggybacking high velocity RHP behind high velocity RHP. Then you get to Sunday and it’s LHP-LHP-LHP. You lose the competitive advantage of bringing in a crafty LHP behind a high 90s RHP.

Listening to the coach discuss this last Thursday, he sounded like he would bring Tidwell along slowly. 1 inning last week, next time 2 innings, then finish a game and maybe later re-enter the rotation. This is a good problem, too many great pitchers.

Watching this game last night I kept thinking of the old adage "great pitching will beat great hitting". This game looked even to maybe a slight nod to Vandy if your throw out the mysterious 5th. I know we won, BUT for that one inning it was mostly a toss up to a narrow win for UT. As I see this weekend playing out, hitting will likely be about even to UT a little better. Defense tossup. Pitching ??? (remember they are the College Champs they didn't get there with no pitching depth left in the closet and the knowhow to use it right. Now this is overlook by most fans,, they can steal bases which leads to runs and for some reason we seem to be a little weak in the catcher department (glaringly throwing). I male this a "lean" to Vandy for the last two games. Hate to say this as I am all UT in everything.

I know Burns is a freshman, but has he never been taught how to hold a base runner on? The 1st run was totally on him for not holding him on!

There isn’t a pitcher in college baseball that would prevent Bradfield from getting 1st to 3rd when he reached base. The dude is insane.
Burns did exactly what he should have. "There's zero chance I can stop this guy (short of having an MLB catcher behind the plate) so I'm just gonna focus on the batter."

Are we sure Halvorsen is even any good compared to what we have right now? His stats are Mizzou were awful

Wrong!!!! Just been Vol so long I do not let the orange glow color my expectations.. However in this post I thought Vandy pitching was great. Well I was wrong to a degree, they are really good, BUT our pitching seems to be the GREAT unit! Base stealing is negated if you can't get on base. So looks like we may sweep the dores. GO VOLS!!

I wouldn’t change anything until it needs changed.

As crazy as that sounds I agree. I don’t care how good Tidwell is i don’t see how you can pull any of the three starters unless they give you reason to. TBH I would probably pull dollander before I pulled beam.

It’s not crazy. I don’t know if it’s Rule 1 but it’s pretty close, “don’t **** up a good thing”.
