Actually, I heard that advice from Satchel Paige on the game of the week way back in the day. He was asked if he liked to throw over to first to hold runners and he said no, if you keep throwing over, you'll eventually throw it away. Best to just look him back.

All due respect to satchel but they didn’t steal bases then like they do now. you have to throw over to keep runners from getting a jump on first movement by the pitcher. A catcher doesn’t have a chance in that situation. You also take Some spring out of the runners legs if you throw over.
