Starting with Kiffins class

We def knew Bonner was an idiot before he got here.

We knew he had done something stupid in the past, but that did not mean that he would do something to get kicked off the the team. Hood for example made a mistake in high school, and has not caused us a single problem in his time here.

Personally I will take a 3 star who wants to be a vol and part of this family, and work as hard as he can to help this university over a 5 star who just looks at college as what he has to do to make it to the NFL.
And then when you see him on TV on Sunday he just represents the town he is from or his high school.

ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.. and 6 times over on Saturday..

Bonner made a mistake about 6 months before joining the team.

Hood's issues was in middle school, and is completely unrelated to this conversation.

He's a great guy, and I am very proud that we can call him a VFL.

Kiffin brought in what is universally considered the biggest bust class in college football history to Tennessee.

Of course we have freakin' suffered.

Kiffin is an ass, and he might not even make it through USC probation. Even I thought he would make it through the USC probation. He is dangerously close to screwing even that up.

Yes OP - they would have been better off with some hard working 3* because they would have been 4 year plus 5 year RS players that weathered the Dooley storm. Would have been a nice core to build on that appreciated their time as Vols.

Agree. I would sign any 5* players like Nucheeseburger & Brown all day long. We just got a bad batch of 5*??

Some of you SMART Dudes, do us(me) a favor...

Give us a list of the 5* that signed with us (recently).

Give me the E. Berry vs. C. Donald info.

& yes I want to sign 5*..

I'm just a 6-pack in and curious.

Thanks for supplying this list. I couldn't help but ponder, what % of these were here for 4 yrs? ... dang!

Was Meachem here 4 yrs? If not, then the only one on this list that was would be Ben Martin and he struggled with significant injury.

kiffin and dooley's negligence and incompetence set the program back 5-7 years, easy. UT should sue them for fraud.

Meachem was here 4 years, and played 3 (redshirted his freshman year). Mapu also played 4 years (J.T. Mapu Profile - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics), but those 2 and Ben Martin are the only ones I could find.

The most important thing is to sign kids with high character and that want to play for UT. Doesn't do us any good if they are 5 stars but cannot stay on the field. UT is a case study for that because it seems we have lost almost all 5 stars over the past decade.

AL has had the highest rated classes since Saban's arrival, results have been off the charts. He has so many 4 and 5 stars on the roster if one screws up that they are replaced rather easy. Recruit great at ever position, especially on the lines and get a QB to manage the game an you win...

The only good thing that Kiffin did was bring in our current o-line and brought Tiny Richardson 3/4 the way here for Doolittle to close on. Now OP can we bring the dozier in and finish burying Kiffin and Dooley? Please? Lets forget these royal losers and move on!

Knowing that a lot of guys have left the team such as Bryce Brown and Nuke before achieving anything at least gives me a little hope that the future my be brighter. I wouldn't feel that way had there been no attrition and they still won 5 games two years in a row.

So, no, I wouldn't change given those two options because the other option doesn't improve your team much either when your talent is inferior to your competition.

I don't think any team is more than 3 years away assuming the right person comes in to turn it around. I think 3 good classes is enough to put a winning team on the field. I hate Vandy but they improved quite a bit from Robbie Caldwell to where they were at 3 years later.

You really look at AL and some of their best players in the Saban era were not 5 star players. In regards to UT they have really only gotten stars correct on WR's.

Thank you for those details. But it looks like you are saying that even Meachem left early. And Mapu may have totalled 4 yrs, but he left in middle to go off on LDS mission before coming back and taking a while to get back into shape.

In other words, there were very few "5"(or 4+)-star guys that played Tennessee football as long as they could play it, without leaving early to do something else.

For some reason I think that Butch is going to get the most out of whatever players he has. Next year he'll get one or two five star guys and several 4 star guys. If you look at the guys coming in they seem to be high character guys, not the thugs that other coaches have recruited.

Well if your asking if it would have been better to have signed 3 stars that would still be here over the 5 stars that left then the simple answer is YES. Its always better to have players than to not have them even less talented ones. At the very least they would have offered depth, knowledge and be able to tell recruits what it means to be a Vol.
So yes it would have been better because some production is better than nothing at all, but if you wanna go down the road of what ifs then why not ask if we would've been better if all those kids that left had stayed and if so would be have been at SEC or even National championship level?

Well I know everyone says we just don't have the talent, but I have to agree with you. Just look at this past season. After the NC game everyone was saying that Oregon was the only team that owuld have challenged bama and if you look at their roster and recruiting(according to rivals) the past 4 years they have been right about where we have been. So with the right coaches running a system based off of our players strengths theres no reason we shouldn't be on that Oregon/Bama level within the next 4 years.
Do I think or expect it to happen this first year, no. It takes time to get to know your players, build a system that fits them and them to learn it. So just like with Dooley I'll give CBJ the first 2 years and expect to see results by the 3rd, but with CBJ I'm more confident that we will see progress and won't be putting him on a win or leave seat going into his 3rd year.
