State of Georgia Recruiting

Does it seem strange that uga does not have a single one of the top 10 players in the state of Georgia committed to play for them? They don't come in until number 12. They only have 1 committment in the state's top 40 (the same number as Georgia Tech). Clemson and bama each have 3 players from their top 10, even Tennessee has one of the top 10.

I know building a fence around the state is meaningless compared to the old days, but this seems strange to me. Am I missing something? I thought Georgia was concerned the best job in America because they have so much talent within an hours drive. Why are they not getting most of that talent?

Geographically Georgia is surrounded by other SEC schools not far away! This is why their die-hard fans are worried as well, it was well known back in the day that the state of Georgia had a lot of volunteer fans/alumni that hated the school.

35 players in Georgia are rated a 4* or 5* and Georgia has a commitment from only one of them.

Instate talent is the most overrated advantage in college football. It's still an advantage, but not nearly what some think it is.

I think instate talent matters if your state is laden with that many 4 and 5 stars. But yes to your point, having a fence around most states really doens't matter, especially with the portal etc.

And GT's lack of a coaching staff that can attract all those good leftovers will keep them in the cellar. Even with their academics, it's asinine that GT can't live in the top 4 of the ACC with the players available in GA. They can't all be stupid.

Then again, Stanford has said that after all the ACT/SAT scores get posted after their junior HS years, they only have about 75 players nationally they can even try to recruit.

I live down in Metro Atlanta now, and what the UGA fans are saying is that they can really cherry pick their recruits. Top 50 player in Georgia, but doesn’t want to work as hard as a 90th ranked player from NC? Might not have the right attitude? Pass, we’ll take the NC kid. They can be choosy. If they feel they have 23 recruits who have talent and will work hard, they can take a risk on 1 or 2 who just have the talent. We, unfortunately, can’t be that picky. Yet.

We're closing that gap.

But UGA has been loaded since 2017. Maybe by 2025 class we'll start to seen as synonymous with Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio State in recruiting.

That does say a lot about the staff, rumors of locker room issues, and coaches not having the state of Georgia backing from high schools...just saying. CKS is not as beloved as the school would like to admit in his own state.

CJH has a far better reputation than all the other coaches in the SEC, something to be said about all of that.

From a GT standpoint I contend the ACC is what's holding them back. These top GA players see the SEC as a path to the NFL. They want to play in exciting environments in Knoxville, Gainsville, Baton Rouge, lots of attention. Not as much excitement in playing in Chapel Hill, Pittsburgh, even Miami has terrible attendance.

I don't think academics hold GT back as much as most think, not like it used to since Calculus is no longer required. Tech signed a top-15 class a few years ago including Jahmyr Gibbs and several other 4-star players but their coach was a clown; great recruiter and terrible coach and lost to the Citadel and every other team with a pulse not named UNC. They have a new coach who played at GT and coached under Saban so I expect them to get better.

But fact remains Metro Atlanta is an SEC town and that works in favor of the Vols especially since the dwags are ignoring their homegrown talent.

I think Kirby is loved by the HS coaches in the state who know him from his playing days and coming home to rescue "their" team. I don't think most HS players care about college football one way or another and feel like I heard Inky say as much. Seem to recall him telling his friends at Crim High about UT and they didn't know anything about the Vols.

It's like HS, it's just a place to play football and most kids don't grow up dreaming of the HS they want to play at like we think they would dream about playing for our college team. Most of those players are seeking the best path to the NFL. Now that said after kids get through college there is clearly a love there but I don't think it plays into recruiting much.

Wasn't too long ago, that 70% of HS Athletes go to their favorite teams growing up, that is a pretty big %. I think relationships have a huge impact.

Bobby Dodd in the past has shown it can get loud. I went to an FSU game there years ago, prob 25 or so, and it was lit up. It ain't Sanford or Neyland, but with a good product on the field it ain't dead.
