Steve Alford to UCLA per Andy Katz

463–235 career record as a HC, not bad. only got to Sweet 16 once though, with SW Missouri State in 1999. They definitely could have done a lot worse

Pretty pathetic when you have to google the name of the new UCLA coach.

I'm just jerking your chain. I lived in Indiana when he was playing for IU and went to his basketball camp as a kid.

Alford has never made it past the Sweet 16. Also, the three times his teams have achieved a three seed (his highest), they've only even made it to the Round of 32 once, and they were blown out by an 11 seed.

He did alright with New Mexico. It didn't translate to wins in March, and he's no "homerun hire" ala Calipari for Kentucky.

I'm not sure he'll be much of an upgrade over Howland.

So does New Mexico now look to Billy Clyde??? A west Texas boy like Gillispie would fit the culture well.

Personally, with the amount of talent they have coming back, I don't think it would be wrong to just make an in-staff promotion. Worked for Murray State, at least.

If not, I think Reggie Theus gets a look. Played at UNLV, coached at NMSU, so he's got ties to the area.

Great deal considering he had just signed a 10 year $20 million deal 10 days ago with New Mexico.

those coaches who can do it at the small colleges can do it with a big budget.

True. But Alford's NCAA Tourney resume leaves a whole lot to be desired. Yeah, he's had great regular season success (2 B1G titles at Iowa, top 10 ranking at UNM) but it doesn't mean much if you can't translate it into second weekend appearances.

Also, looks like UNM fans want Craig Neal (assistant at UNM) as head coach.

I understand why he'd leave for UCLA, the most storied basketball team ever. However, he had it made at UNM. Expectations were not too high, was beloved by Albuquerque and could've retired there. At UCLA, he has to win and go far or he'll be canned in 3 years

His playing days were before my time. He wasn't a good enough player for me to know who he was. His coaching profile wasn't high either.

I wasn't impressed with New Mexico. Way overrated.

He was the coach at Iowa for almost 10 years. You must not have followed college basketball intensely growing up, because I'm only 27 and vividly remember his days at Iowa. Especially his first season the story was him going against Knight and the mentor-pupil overplayed factor.
