Warning to UCLA: Beware of coaches from UNM with ties to Bob Knight. We know (Dave Bliss).

STEVE ALFORD (at his press conference this week):
"I think it was a pretty big commitment, not only on the school's part, but it
was a pretty big commitment on my part especially what's out there and the
opportunities that are out there to show my loyalty to UNM and how much I appreciate UNM and how much I want to continue to build this thing."

He was the coach at Iowa for almost 10 years. You must not have followed college basketball intensely growing up, because I'm only 27 and vividly remember his days at Iowa. Especially his first season the story was him going against Knight and the mentor-pupil overplayed factor.

Now that you mention it, I do remember that interview with Bob Knight. Another classic Knight moment. I didn't realize that was the same guy.

He did alright with New Mexico. It didn't translate to wins in March, and he's no "homerun hire" ala Calipari for Kentucky.

I'm not sure he'll be much of an upgrade over Howland.

Gonna be hard to top (in terms of March Madness performance). He did go to three straight Final Fours.

You've never heard of Steve Alford? Wow

Lol, football fans.

This is career suicide for Alford. He will never get out of the shadow of Wooden, just like every coach since, except possibly Harrick. UCLA is a career killer.

It's not even that easy to win at UCLA. You'll always be in the shadow of Wooden and fans will kill you if you don't win a title in three years.

Don't blame the young people for not knowing someone Alford's age. I knew, but only because I love reading and watching things about history.

I agree that UCLA is a really bad place to go. You're only going to be compared to Wooden and people are going to be silly and judge that way. The only way Alford stays for a long time is if he recruits really well and gets final fours in the the near future. If he doesn't the cycle will continue. And even if he does, people won't be happy without titles.

Yeah UCLA is a terrible place. Awful campus, weather and nothing to do in Southern California.

I get a sense Alford runs pretty clean programs--he's not sleazy. He's a good, solid coach, just not sure if he'll recruit well enough to be a national title contender. Maybe--ucla has got a helluva lot more cachet than iowa or new mexico. Howland got into trouble with ucla officials a couple of years ago because of various player problems that he just basically ignored--he didn't exactly run a tight ship--and he was almost fired then. That may have contributed to Howland's ouster and the hiring of a guy like Alford. I also heard that Howland pissed off most of the aau coaches in southern california, though not sure why.
