When do you think storming the court is justified?

After watching North Carolina storm the court after beating Duke, it had me thinking about when, and if, certain teams should storm the court. A team like North Carolina should never storm the court, in my opinion. They've 'been there.'

Iowa stormed the court after beating Purdue today. Purdue? Really?

I had this conversation a couple of weeks ago with my father and we both agreed that you should only storm the court if you beat a #1 team, and haven't 'been there' or if it's a HUGE upset of a #1 team.

We also agreed that it's okay to storm the court, for smaller one-bid conferences, when you win the conference championship, similar to Missouri State winning it's first conference title ever last weekend.

What do you say, Volnation?

Its pretty gay. It looses the spontaneous celebration fun aspect when it's seemingly premeditated and seems to happen weekly somewhere.

I think there are 2 categories for storming the court. There's the acceptability of storming for bad teams and there's the acceptability of storming for good teams. I'll start with bad.

If you're a bad team, you can storm the court if you meet one of the following criteria:
  1. You have just beaten a Top 10-20 team (I add 11-20 in the event it's a Duke, NC, etc. that's simply ranked a little low)
  2. You have just beaten a rival you have had a history of struggling against (You must have had very recent struggles against that team)
  3. You have just beaten your first ranked team in X years
  4. You have just won a Conference title, whether regular season or Tournament
  5. You have just won a game on a buzzer-beating shot that covers at least 1/2 the floor
If you're a good team, you can storm the court if you meet one of the following criteria:
  1. You have just beaten a rival you have had a history of struggling against (You must have had very recent struggles against that team)
  2. You have just beaten a rival to win a Championship, whether it be regular season, Conference tournament, or National
  3. You have just won because of a miraculous string of events (see: Reggie Miller scores 8 points in 11 seconds) against a very highly ranked team or rival
That's all I can think of at the moment

I was disappointed at UNC. They're ranked 13th and beat a #4 team at home. That's not court-storming worthy, rival or not.

UT should storm the court Sunday just for the hell of it, win or lose.

Good call. I'd like someone to do it after getting blown out. After making an effort to be silent for the entire game.

IIRC, Wisconsin tore down their own goalposts after a loss one time.

Keep the people on their toes. I like it.

Exactly. If people are storming their courts for any old regular season win, then why can't we throw a changeup to the college basketball world and storm it after a loss?

Storming the court/Rushing the field should be very sacred IMO.

A top 25 school should never rush the court with the only exception being this is your first year cracking the top 25 and you beat a conference foe/rival that is perennially ranked in the top ten or so and beats you every year. For example, even if UK is the number #1 team in the land and they beat Tennessee in football for the first time in 30 years, they've earned the right to rush the field. Basketball teams like Carolina, Duke, UK, KU, UCLA, UCONN or Syracuse would have to suffer for at least 15 years before rushing the court would be deemed acceptable in my opinion.

Football teams like USC, OU, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, even Tennessee would be in the same 15 years of suffering boat. Had Ohio State beat Arkansas in the Horseshoe, I might grant an exception since they suck so bad against the SEC. Notre Dame is getting close to earning the right back to rush the field, but even with all their suffering I just can't see them doing it. They're freaking Notre Dame.

As I said in the other thread, rushing the court is for beating a team you have no prayer against. Winning a conference title when you were picked in the bottom half of the league. If you were picked third and you win the conference, you haven't really shocked the world. But say a team like Butler had beaten Duke last year in the championship game, I think letting their fans storm the court would have been justified. That would have been wild. And I say that as a Duke fan.

If Duke had rushed the court on Senior night after their blowout win over Carolina last year, I would have been appalled. There's just no justification imo for top teams to need to celebrate like that.

UNC storming the court makes no sense; they have way too much tradition as a powerhouse for that.

At this point for UT I'd only accept it if say today we were playing for the outright SEC Championship or maybe a perfect run through the SEC.

While I enjoy watching a good field rush, I've always laughed at how ridiculous it seems when you really think about it. We're so happy we won that we're destroying part of the stadium. Shouldn't you go to their stadium and tear down their goalpost?

And just to throw another wrinkle, if we storm the court, tear down the backboards.

Storm the court after the first basket is made by the Vols....a la UGA vs Florida in football.

I don't think it's that big of a deal to storm the court/field. Plus it really pisses off the losing team

The only issue with that is then you sit there and watch the other team shoot free throws for 45 minutes.

i remember when someone asked spurrier about another team charging the field and tearing down the goal posts. he said something to the effect that he would be concerned when someone beats florida and doesn't storm the field.

if i were a duke fan, i would take great satisfaction in the fact that no one can beat them without feeling the need to rush the court.......even north carolina.

i like the fact that florida doesn't rush the court or storm the field. i do think there is some meaningful symbolism there.

the only time i remember gator folks rushing the field was the florida-georgia game in 1984......which proves the point. florida won 27-0 and rushed the field because (1) beating georgia was an event (2) security in jacksonville isn't what it once was.

As far as I'm concerned, storm it whenever you want and have a good time. That's the whole point of college athletics.

I laughed at both but UNC really REALLY surprised me. I can't believe they did that.
