Storming the Court?

You realize that beating Duke meant they won the ACC?

yeah, ESPN keeps saying that, but they didn't anything other than a game. The ACC is only decided via the tournament. We'll see how round 3 goes if both teams make it to the championship game..

I am pretty sure that regardless of how the ACC Tournament plays out, UNC will be sewing a 2011 on a banner.

In my opinion, regular season conference championships matter more than conference tournament championships for big time schools and big time conferences.

I don't think it's that big of a deal to storm the court/field. Plus it really pisses off the losing team

and now the university has to pay...I think it's 50K each time? (which I mean, was instituted for the safety of the players of the losing teams, but still)

i remember when someone asked spurrier about another team charging the field and tearing down the goal posts. he said something to the effect that he would be concerned when someone beats florida and doesn't storm the field.

if i were a duke fan, i would take great satisfaction in the fact that no one can beat them without feeling the need to rush the court.......even north carolina.

i like the fact that florida doesn't rush the court or storm the field. i do think there is some meaningful symbolism there.

the only time i remember gator folks rushing the field was the florida-georgia game in 1984......which proves the point. florida won 27-0 and rushed the field because (1) beating georgia was an event (2) security in jacksonville isn't what it once was.

I remember the following year UGA fans rushed the field after beating #1 UF 24-3. Several fights broke out on the field, and Albert broke his arm after a couple UGA students rushed him. After that Jacksonville officials got serious about security.

As for UNC storming the court, I thought it was weak. It's North Carolina basketball...winning the ACC is what you're supposed to do.

Harvard's was justified imo.

UNC storming the court was a joke.

Beating a #1, winning a conference, or beating a rival for the first time in a long time are "storm" worthy. That's about it IMO

Nebraska stormed the court when they beat us this year. We stormed the field when we beat them this year. What goes around comes around. I've never been an advocate for this practice, but I got over it.

You know their win over Duke won the conference for them, right?

just like an Oregon fan to not pay attention to anything. The ACC doesn't recognize a regular season champion. No one has won a conference championship yet in the ACC.

this just shows the state of UNC basketball recently.

Right, those National Championship banners that are just rotting away in the Dean Dome...

It shows that the student body was excited about beating Duke, their rival and the defending National Champion, to close the season and clinch the ACC title.

Blow me. I heard about a million times that winning that game was for the regular season championship.

Sorry, but UNC is 1 of probably 5 or 6 teams that should never storm the court. I thought it was pretty pathetic that they did. Maybe act like you have been there before.

I like how UT fans, who do not know what it is like to have ever been there before (in terms of basketball), are passing judgment by saying "act like you've been there before".

Maybe KU fans should not have rioted in the streets of Lawrence when KU beat UNC in the Final Four in 2008? After all, KU had appeared in the Championship game as recently as 2003???

This is ridiculous. People who are admonishing the UNC student section for storming the court are, in my opinion, just trying to deny their own greed and envy over the basketball tradition that UNC has.

Since a regular season game is JUST LIKE the Final Four...

People just think it's stupid for UNC fans to start acting a fool after a game that most people thought they would win. It's funny that an ACC regular-season "championship" is now a huge deal there. Reminds me of Maryland last year, and for UNC, that's really sad.

As a lifelong KU fan, I can state that regular season conference championships are still a huge deal in Lawrence...and, we have 54 of them!

If KU had not won the conference in two years, started out with a bad season, came back to put themselves in a position to win the conference by beating Mizzou in Allen Fieldhouse, and won, the KU student body would storm the court.

It's not sad.

Pretty sure regular season championships actually count in the Big 12 though.

When Maryland stormed the court, they were also celebrating the fact that they hadn't beaten Duke in like 7 tries, and won by single digits in a hotly contested game. And it's freaking MARYLAND. UNC students doing it is flat-out embarrassing by comparison. How often do you think Cameron gets stormed?
