Strangest Coaching Searches

Hart's job is to higher a damn football coach, not talk hiring strategy with the delusional fans. For some reason people think they're entitled to know Harts every thought and move in regards to the coaching search.

He's running a business and we are his customers. You don't allow your clientele to expect more than you know you're going to deliver. Sounds like you're am old timer but realize that college football is a business now, not a hobby or just a varsity sport. The AD has support staff that handles PR, if they don't care about public relations then why do they have people paid to do so?

Multiple reports came out stating Gruden was not interested and UT was looking elsewhere. It's not the AD's fault you believed posters on a message board.

I'm glad Hart is playing it close to vest. It was embarrassing hearing all the names that turned us down.

Every day that passes gets Hart another day closer to hiring the guy he's wanted to hire the whole year. He's a "D" minded coach that has multiple rings as a coach in the SEC. His buddy from Bama, Kirby Smart!!!
To bad his "D" abilities hasn't been proven without a "D" mastermind like Saban running the show and none of his rings have come as a result of a team he was the HC of. I'm losing faith in Hart and he has yet to give me any reason to have ever had faith in the first place.

When Mich St hired Dantonio, the rumors were all over the place:

Pelini
Brian Kelly
Todd Grantham
Pat Shurmur
TOM IZZO!!!
Nick Saban

Tom Izzo called in one of the local hacks to reveal to him that Izzo himself was the top candidate for the football job. That revealed one of the media leaks. Classic.

There were Raining Pelini Heads on the Red Cedar Message Board.

Flight Trackers had MSU's prez going to Cleveland, had Saban flying to the same location as the MSU plane (turns out they sought Nicks opinion on Dantonio)

The flight tracking thing was c-r-a-z-y to the point that when the plane landed at Capital City Airport, we knew there was a new coach on it, but didnt know who the coach was. And BAM Mark Dantonio walked off the plane. There were students out there taking pictures. Posting them on the board.

Brian Kelly was brought back in for a second interview, but the Board of Trustees were not completely behind him. (character issues)

Mark Dantonio was on Sabans staff when he was at State, and won a NC on the staff at O$U. He brought two straight 11 win seasons, and 5 straight bowl games. Looking to get the mojo back next year.

What is strange to me is: we are almost a month after Dooley firing and Hart is searching like he had no clue DD was going to be fired. To not have some sort of base coaching candidates on speed dial when the decision was made is beyond me.

because Strong has been the man all along..
Wonder if he's rethinking after the ARK DUMP TRUCK HIRE

:eek:lol: thanks. We have had some tough times at Mich St with football hires.

The hire before that we had all but signed Marvin Lewis. He toured campus, and the facilities. He went shopping for houses one weekend. He wanted an "out-clause" and it was never approved. He withdrew, and we ended up hiring John sLappy Williams. Of course, that was leaked while JLS was coaching Louisville in a bowl game.

Kids on the sidelines in street clothes were taking phone calls, passing it on to guys in uniform. JLS had to announce at half-time that he was leaving for MSU after the game.

The hire before that, Nick Saban left for LSU because the President at that time didnt care about sports. Wouldnt give on recruiting issues, and salary for assistants. Nick couldnt compete for good coaches or good player because of it. He split. Players marched to the Prz mansion one night demanding Bobby Williams....sigh......and that was all the former prez needed. Beat Florida in the Citrus, and hired that day.

We have had a couple guys on the BOT at MSU that wanted more control than they deserve. Now that LuAnna Simon is Prez of the university, there is someone in control that KNOWS sports and cares about sports, and we dont have those problems. Also, quality AD with Mark Hollis.

Do any of you guys have a story of a stranger coaching search than this one?

What's strange about this search? So far, it seems pretty pedestrian. Strange would be us hiring a coach; being sued by his former university-employer; spending months of legal wrangling over a buyout; with us finally agreeing to pay $2.5 million of the $4 million in awarded liquidated damages. Then, after doing all of that, we have no choice but to fire the coach for extremely poor performance and start all over again.

My Michigan friends would say catch your breath, do your due diligence, and make sure you got it right. It is 64 days to National Signing Day. We have time to get it right!

True story. UT has yet to be turned down by someone that they offered the job to (that we know of). This is not strange by any stretch of the imagination.

um has had a couple strange searches as well.

If UT hires an NFL position coach, I will consider this hire to have gone rouge.

Well our saga may be coming to a close!!! But still would like to hear some more tales of weird or strange coaching searches. Wasnt it george O Leary who was hired at Notre dame then got fired before coaching a game because he lied on his resume?
