Strength and Conditioning of The Players

It didn't seem like we got gassed late in games last season compared to Dooley led squads. I now there was a lot of "give up" in games Dooley coached...but under CBJ/Lawson...it looked as if we where still fresh going into the 4th qtr of hard games. Not many hands on hips, less injuries due to conditioning, faster/stronger. Its exactly what we needed and need more of....Lawson and CBJ is getting it done.

My opinion, Todd Kelly Jr. will definitely, be moved from safety to outside linebacker, you can tell by his body stature, 6'0 191...

We kinda need him to play safety opposite Randolph this year. He'd have to put on 25 lbs....maybe in a couple of years but why? Our LB recruiting is going well right now. Besides, McDowell as a freshman is taller and 15 lbs heavier right now....he's be a better candidate at least in the short term. That being said, I'd rather see them both at safety...UT needs them badly at that position this year.

Seems like every pic I have seen of players, they all look pretty ripped! I think CBJ and Co. are working the hell out of these guys and that is good! JMO

.

Agreed but, being ripped simply puts our players at even par with just about every other SEC squad, doesn't?

What in the hell were dools and company doing ! :dunno:
Evidently our guy were doing more 12 oz curls than standard curls.

There's a reason that Bama's and LSU's S&C Coaches have what amounts to tenure in their profession...singular dedication, consistent output....and results...it seems all Lawson needs is spins of the globe to make his own imprint...face it...ANYONE who gets hired at this level is academically knowledgeable and certified credentially...but like the HC position, what you do works...or it doesn't....it seems he's improved athletic stock at every stop he's been.

LSU has former vol assistant Tommy Moffitt. He is really good. He's a Cajun though. Be cool for him to come back.

Did he study under Stuckey?

I do believe he had an influence. Moffitt is Billy Beron's brother in law. He was on the staff in 94. Long and Moffitt were both young coaches back then. I hung around Burton, Beron, Duff and a few others back then. Moffitt was a prankster and fun.

I think more than anything the frequency of S&C coach changes plus the changes of direction with regard to philosophy hurt the past players a good bit. Lawson has them going in a singular direction now based on Jones' philosophies on O and D.

IMO, one of the keys to Oregon's success is that they have hired HC's that didn't change the philosophies of their team very much. Dooley's biggest disservice to UT was his failed attempt to go to a Bama style power O and 3-4 D. Previously UT was balanced and multiple on O and built around speed on D. Jones is headed back in that direction on D.

On O, the loss of the OL may be a blessing in disguise. The new starters will be more products of the new system.

In my opinion, when you have losing seasons like we've had it's a good thing when those players depart. In this case replacing starters is good. I'm not trying to knock our recent players but when it boils down to it the results just weren't there.

One of these days we 're going to keep our players at the position we recruited them to dominate at.

Yeah just like back in the day.

Charles Davis at QB
Al Wilson at RB
Kevin Burnett at Safety
Dominique Stevenson at RB
Fred Weary at DT
Jason Witten at DE

Sorry, had to do it :)

Agreed. Need to get rid of that losing mindset of the past 5 yrs..the mental toughness was better last year - interested to see the team's attitude in year 2.

I kinda like the idea of having a bigger safety back there. Nothing strikes fear into WR's more than a safety that can come up and lay the wood. It worked pretty good for the Seahawks.

Not sure being ripped is a big requirement in football. I'm sure it looks good to the ladies and maybe some dudes but I would much rather hear about the guys learning the plays and understanding their assignments. But that's just me, I like football and not body building :salute::salute:

No it isn't. Quit making stuff. Aj is still walking just fine. Everybody's an expert off one minute clips.

Your logic is astounding. I didn't "make stuff" up. I never said those knees belong to AJ. I wouldn't say I'm an expert but having a degree in kinesiology and holding a personal training certification certainly allows me to a credible assessment.

We need an enforcer back there. That has been missing since EB left. No team seems to fear running around back there b/c nobody can lay the wood, or catch them if they could.

I was hoping McNeil was going to be that guy, but he just looked lost and slow most of last season. McDowell and TKjr can put an end to that problem IMO. Gaulden is a tackling machine, but they are saying his weight is 165 @6'1"! Not sure if true?

A good thing is that a lot of the young players came in early and started working out in Jan. That 7-8 months is going to be huge for strength, muscle, and fitness. We've already heard that some of the players have put on 10-20 pounds.

He just said he was a personal trainer. I wanted to see a good ol fashion argument on VN this morning. This could be it. Are squats bad for your knees? 0 we are about to find out folks.

Good thing Todd Kelly Sr position was changed when he got to Tennessee. The thing is TKJ may have been recruited to play LB or SS, we don't know what the coaches are thinking. They tell kids what they want to hear just to get them at the school. The best attitude the kid needs to have is "put me where ever you need me coach, I'll do whatever is needed to help the TEAM".

Squats are not bad for your knees. Bad squats are bad for your knees.

J. James commented last year that under CDD, players would often times just check off S&C sessions.

That is one reason our OL underperformed the last two years. Tiny being banged up and transitioning to the Read Option were other factors.

I can't understand young guys with all of that equipment and expertise at their disposal, and a chance to play at the highest level, just lying about working out and checking out.

Probably a group mentality. Nobody pushing anyone else to get better, so why go work out alone? Glad to see that's a thing of the past. It's amazing what stronger linemen can do for your line play, who would've guessed?

Moffitt and Long are both part of the Gayle Hatch coaching tree. Hatch's protégés are well represented as S&C coaches in college football's premier programs.
