Suggestions for trip to LA

renting a car is a must - this is not a city; it is a sprawl. Second the comment about Mulholland Dr - you can wrap it into your Hollywood sign visit. Mulholland has several parts each of which are fun.

Driving the canyons is fun if you are into nature stuff. If you have time, Leo Carrillo State Beach (north of Malibu) is nice and if you time it right the tide pools are very cool.

LA is so damn huge and spread out that everything is a long way from everything.

Also don't drive drunk.

Download and use the uber app on your phone.

Use uberx as opposed to cabs. It's cheaper.

Use uber x though . And don't tip the driver.

Don't think uber had made it out there yet but it's awesome.

Kinda on a budget so I'll be staying at one if the hotels by LAX. Custom hotel looks neat & is pretty good price. Actually saw it on an Anthony Bourdain show last night.

Thanks for all the suggestions though fellas. May try to hit a beach with more college aged kids but it'll be fine either way.

My suggestion then would be Redondo or Manhattan beach. But since you're staying close to the airport, another option is maybe drive up or down PCH(Pacific Coast Highway)and find something.

LA has some really good Mexican and Asian food. If you're up in Hollywood and want some good Asian flavor that won't kill the budget, Toi or the Pink Pepper. As for Mexican food, depending on where you are, ask around for the good taco spots.

OK IN-n-Out. I think it's overrated but still good. My preference is Fat Burger. But if you go, remember "animal style" and "cooked well done".

Other than that, maybe try seeing the Grove, Universal City Walk, Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade and pier, if in Hollywood, maybe stop in at Amoeba Music.

Hope you have fun.

You certainly have to eat some Mexican food. Lot's of good places.

I wouldn't personally do Malibu. Just do venice and santa monica.

If you have time drive down to Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.

You could also catch an angels game maybe if they are in town and you guys are big baseball fans.

At in-n-out I usually order a double double with grilled onions. Sometimes I'll have it mustard grilled. I personally don't do animal style fries. If I were you I would try one fries regular and one animal style.

Fathers Office in LA is pretty cool and unique-don't ask for alterations or ketchup.

The bar at the top of standard is cool and usually has some babes. I always have fun at barney's beanery to catch a game.

A fun bar near westwood is Q's. Kind of divey but fun.

Don't waste your time seeing the coliseum. You'll drive right past in headed to downtown, but nothing to see.

This. Don't slow down too much. The Mausoleum is in a fairly rough part of town.

LA live (where staples and downtown is) is pretty cool. Lots of restaurants etc.

If you want to hang out with college age kids head to Hermosa beach.

Honestly though LA is weird and spread out. Orange County is way better.

Again have as much Mexican food as you can. And try del taco as a fast food place. It put's taco bell to shame.

Have fun!

Thanks for the help guys. I think we're gonna head to six flags magic mountain on a Sunday so maybe it won't be too crowded.

520, you think it would be best to drive out to Valencia or take the amtrak from union station? Looks like a pretty good ways out there so I'm kinda iffy about driving. Never really been on a train though so I'm not sure how that would work or how long it would take.

I'm not 520, but ixnay on the Amtrak. Its not that far to drive to 6 flags. Sundays will be very crowded there, though. But that's OK.

In LA (actually, most of SoCal) traffic, just remember that it will take longer than you think and the freeways are chock full of idiots. But that's OK. Just take your time and enjoy. There has been a lot of good input for you ITT.

Ah I hope not. I read online somewhere that Sundays in late August are alright since some of the summer crowd is gone and LA schools are back in session. Guess we'll see when we get there.

Driving isn't really crazy. Hardest part is beach traffic and parking.

I'm sure it'll be fine. I have 3 uncles that all drive trucks out west & back and they said pretty much every highway will be the same in LA.

I'm guessing there's a ton of volleyball nets along the beaches in LA & we both like playing so I think we're gonna try and jump in a few games while we're there..or maybe not, not sure how the locals like randoms playing volleyball with them.
