I don't want him directly criticizing the kids. BTW, what do you think hes doing when he says the only way to correct the current situation is to recruit, recruit, recruit. Hes right by the way, but hes criticizing the players.

I just want to hear him be candid about how poorly the team played and how poorly he and his staff prepared his team to play.

Me too. He just rides the fence when it comes to the kids. Of course recruiting is the answer but I don't think that's being critical. It is what it is. I hear you though KB

Dumb! Maybe a Spurrier can get away with that but a first yr coach with no talent or very little is not going to do that. Do I think we were out coached last night, yes I do. However Butch is selling change both outside and inside the program and evidenced by our recruiting class doing a pretty good job of it. I thought we played not to lose last night and that is "unacceptable" but we must let the man do his job.

I have no issue with him not publicly criticizing people. Just because he doesn't rip people in public doesn't mean he is satisfied with things. A basic leadership principle is this :rebuke in private, praise in public.

All the euphemisms are starting to get old. Fans are growing tired of them.

Zach Collaros was on Ainge's show in the offseason and one thing he said was CBJ's clichés, sayings, euphemisms etc. are a staple that everyone would eventually get tired of. He definitely knew his old coach well.

The more it goes on the more he sounds like a snake oil salesmen.

Coach speak, what else can he say? I think he's an average coach, not great but not bad. But fans are hilarious, CBJ makes the same statements that any new coach makes and it's "Butch gets it", "Brick by Brick" and all the other cute statements he's made. 99% of the coaches understand how to build a program and they all have the cute little sayings that the fans want to hear, the question is can he actually do what he says he will do. That won't be answered for at least 3-4 more years. He's had winning teams in other conferences but they weren't the SEC.

Good post. I agree. I like him and think he can do well at UT, but those cliches get old when you are getting smoked each week. They also would be better if every other coach didn't throw them around as if they just thought it up that morning.

True freshman qb throwing to josh smith and Jacob carter with no TE. Probst, Toney, Arnold, swafford chasing vandy receivers. Basically 4 walkons.
We have all sorts of problems, coaching included, but you can't ignore the roster.

I simply expected to see the team's play improve so that by week 13 (which is where we are now) you could see tangible evidence that this staff was good at player development, good at teaching fundamental stuff like how to run a route, get open and then actually catch a football, and that the team played solid, disciplined, smart, hard-nosed football.....

I have seen no evidence of any of that. If I did, I honestly wouldn't care what our current record is, I'd take the 4-8 that this team will be after the Kentucky game. That's the disappointing part for me.

How dare u point out things that a potential great staff would be doing but if ur not one of the sunshine sheep u know nothing..

I've stated it before these guys must be ignoring the best staff america all week in practice because they have regressed all year n we know no way its this best staff problem has to be dools players.. Right???

Freaking insane that people can't support n love a team but be critical of the job they r doing.. This guyvis making 4m a year to lose to candy.. Why is that acceptable to any vol fan regardless of what year they r in..geez!!!

Coaches that are gurus get more out of their talent thru scheme. CBJ isn't a guru and neither are either of his ccoordinators. It's blue collar. He'll have to do it thru the roster.
Sadly Dobbs was his choice. All I can say is he is lucky that Chaney laid the groundwork with Ferg. This staff did nothing to land him. This staff is responsible for two of the worst QB performances ever in UT history. UF and Vandy.

What is even worse is these coaches have had plenty of time to evaluate the QB position and elected not to recruit that position.

"worst depth and some of the worst talent"

None of these excuses hold any water when an FCS team can go into the swamp and win a ball game. We have better depth and talent than GA Southern and I think we should expect to win a game against Vandy at home. Gray uniforms and complaining about depth and talent will not win any games for us. Instruction and motivation is what will bring us back. The poor play on special teams leads me to believe our players are receiving far too little coaching.

I still believe in Butch, but I genuinely believe he made a tremendous mistake in bringing his coordinators. I understand the stability needs in coaching, just wish Butch cared more about winning than loyalty, when he chose his coaching staff.

I would say the people who understand how miserable this program was when he got here, and how difficult it will be to rebuild it, are not tired of them at all.

On the other hand, the people who expected us to go 7-5 or 8-4 with the worst depth and some of the worst talent in the SEC? They're probably tired of them because they don't understand the sport of college football.

I'm so tired of the we don't have talent argument! I understand we've had our share of attrition but there's absolutely no way Vandy has more "talent" than us. At this point their players are playing better than ours and therefore appear to be more "talented". We have multiple players that were recruited by good to elite programs while Vandy has multiple players whom Vandy was their best offer and/or only chance to play SEC football. So either the recruiting services and multiple coaches around the country overestimated our recruits when they offered and vastly undervalued most of Vandy's or Vandy has developed their players while ours have not.

The claim that we lack WR depth/skill is laughable, when the 2012 WR class was rated number 1 in the country. What's happened to Bowles, Croom, Pig? None, other than Pig at times, has lived up to their billing. Were they overrated and not talented, or have they not been developed?

Worley is one of the most decorated QB's in HS history yet he struggles to hit wide open receivers. Some argue he was a system QB, what system is that? One where WR are wide open and therefore reads are obsolete? He's had that at times this year and missed horribly.

This secondary starts multiple highly coveted players yet they can't seem to cover, tackle or find the ball at all.

I refuse to believe we don't have the talent to beat the likes of Vandy, Mizzou and not struggle with South Alabama, Troy etc. This program has lacked development and coaching up for 8+ years now.
