Heading to Destin and I have a big surf/saltwater casting rod. Honestly, I have no idea what to do with it. Any advice is much appreciated.

I'm no help there. Did you see my post the other day about Dr. Martin, the cardiologist in Knoxville.

And peer fishing, I had a friend that went every day. All he ever used was a burger King straw above the hook and he never walked off that peer empty handed. Amazing!

I'm heading to panama in the morning. We're gonna do dome surf fishing. I usually fish the piers, but I'm gonna try everything this time. We always have good luck on the piers. Squid, and shrimp, and cut bait. I'm sure it'll work surf fishing.

First time I saw that I thought people were crazy, but it works! I have those, and some neon, rubber sunglass holders. Use the the sane way. We catch mackerel, and lady fish on them.

Pier sounds fun... Same technique? Weight with leader?

I have some bright straws, just hook them like bait?

Idk where I posted. He was my grandpa's cardiologist before he passed, just didn't know if he was still in practice. I know the MD circle isn't that small but I thought I'd take a chance in asking you.

Sorry, but don't know him. I don't deal much with grown-people docs :)

First buy a license. I'd buy a regular rod at wal mart, get some shrimp and go in shore. You can go to any wall, dick or bridge with decent luck.

I buy what I call a drop shot leader at Walmart down there. It has two lines, one for the weight to sink, and one half way up that let's the bait float off the bottom. They're about $1-2.

id highly suggest not getting your rod around any dicks. unless thats your thing.

surf fished for years. so far, none of that sounds accurate. i do agree walmart will have best deal for a surf rod.

i would rate the baits for surf fishing as follows in Florida. #1 Live Shrimp/pig/pin/mullet #2 if possible, sand fleas or fresh/not frozen shrimp #3 clam #4 cut mullet.

ill tell you this. ive fished Carolina to Sebastian. and in Destin. if youre surf fishing go with a longer rod with good feel to it. i always liked Shakespeare's Ugly Stix. Atlantic coast we battle heavier surfs. so we fish bigger ****. you gulf guys can catch big red's, so, maybe go with a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. id skip any pier fishing, especially gulf side. i definitely recommend to take a medium/heavy casting or spinning rod with a DOA shrimp for casting around any jetty's or inlet. this can hold barracuda, sheepshead, jack, pompano...any thing in the ocean is looking for a place to hide/ambush prey. sometimes if the tides right, especially gulf side....early am you can spot a bait ball running up and down the beach and take that DOA/or injured fish pattern and catch a nice Blue or Red.

also. ive seen guys catch nice whiting or pompano right there in the surf while surf fishing.

in NSB i usually run a pompano rig i buy, instead of fishing bull**** homemade rigs (i tie my own flyfishing ****) ill use a siz 2/0 hook, non treble circle hook. ive used every thing imaginable and this works best. Early in the season like this use the shrimp or live fish. if you catch smaller fish like lady fish. cut them up for bait, crab too.

usually an hour before incoming tide and an hour after outgoing is best.

one guy mentioned going to brackish water. that wont apply to you in gulf. if yoh have access to a boat. go to nearest bridge and cast along the pilings for spanish macks or cobia. but, if youre froggy you can make it to oil rigs for the motherlode of Tuna.

good luck. ive hooked ladyfish upwards of several pounds, tons of reds, sharks, pompano, whiting, and bluefish for the pan. even hooked shark

I'm just offended by this. It's bad enough you're at the beach without us and now you're rubbing it in with this thread, doc. :p

can't help with the fishing, but get the smoked tuna dip at Pompano's Joes, have breakfast at the Whale's tail, and lunch at the Red Bar in Grayton Beach

I surf fish near Destin every summer (in Seaside). Some years, the Seagrass is too difficult and there is just no point in trying. If that's the case find a pier or just go fish under the bridge.
I usually just use shrimp and I catch Whiting and Ladyfish.
Do not carry extra bait in your pocket if you walk out waist-deep. Sharks aren't just something on Discovery Channel one week a year.
