man, i fish in New Smyrna most of the time (shark bite capital of world) and literally have had a black tip take an injured red in less than 1.5 feet of water. scary **** to see jaws, fin, and teeth snag a fish.

for the most part they use the inlet. and we never see them.

id highly suggest not getting your rod around any dicks. unless thats your thing.

surf fished for years. so far, none of that sounds accurate. i do agree walmart will have best deal for a surf rod.

i would rate the baits for surf fishing as follows in Florida. #1 Live Shrimp/pig/pin/mullet #2 if possible, sand fleas or fresh/not frozen shrimp #3 clam #4 cut mullet.

ill tell you this. ive fished Carolina to Sebastian. and in Destin. if youre surf fishing go with a longer rod with good feel to it. i always liked Shakespeare's Ugly Stix. Atlantic coast we battle heavier surfs. so we fish bigger ****. you gulf guys can catch big red's, so, maybe go with a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. id skip any pier fishing, especially gulf side. i definitely recommend to take a medium/heavy casting or spinning rod with a DOA shrimp for casting around any jetty's or inlet. this can hold barracuda, sheepshead, jack, pompano...any thing in the ocean is looking for a place to hide/ambush prey. sometimes if the tides right, especially gulf side....early am you can spot a bait ball running up and down the beach and take that DOA/or injured fish pattern and catch a nice Blue or Red.

also. ive seen guys catch nice whiting or pompano right there in the surf while surf fishing.

in NSB i usually run a pompano rig i buy, instead of fishing bull**** homemade rigs (i tie my own flyfishing ****) ill use a siz 2/0 hook, non treble circle hook. ive used every thing imaginable and this works best. Early in the season like this use the shrimp or live fish. if you catch smaller fish like lady fish. cut them up for bait, crab too.

usually an hour before incoming tide and an hour after outgoing is best.

one guy mentioned going to brackish water. that wont apply to you in gulf. if yoh have access to a boat. go to nearest bridge and cast along the pilings for spanish macks or cobia. but, if youre froggy you can make it to oil rigs for the motherlode of Tuna.

good luck. ive hooked ladyfish upwards of several pounds, tons of reds, sharks, pompano, whiting, and bluefish for the pan. even hooked shark

I caught hella fish with my method. But hey what do I know. I only lived all my life on the west coast. Have fun surf fishin

if your really cheap, just rent one from wal mart, just take it back and say the reel isn't working right and I want my money back :)

I did do some pier fishing in Myrtle Beach, didn't catch much of nothing, but I did use my fishing poles,be sure to soak em in fresh water and take the reels apart when you get home and clean em out good and give em a good lube job

west coast of US? or Florida?

if youre being snarky sayin 'enjoy surf fishing' then thats cool. i get it. id much rather be on a boat fishing, just cant always afford it. besides stayin on shore allows us family guys to make wives happy, and to fish.

Haven't been able to get out yet.... Busy with the kiddos, and the storms early in the week have the water a mess. Today looks better though, may run by the tackle shop.

The storms have missed us except once, and we missed it because we were at the park.

Anybody done any fly fishing for tarpon? That's on my bucket list but I've really no idea on how to go about it.

on e coast Merritt Island NP is about the first real shot at landing a tarpon on fly, granted they may be farther north at different times of year. finding them maybe problematic.

Titusville Fly Fishing | Wading the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

the redfishing is exceptional here. you may run into a tarpon. ill say this, rule of thumb on tarpon. if you see them rolling or schooling, go ahead and give it a shot cause you may not see them again for a while.

fyi, i laid a crab imitation right near a tailing 20Lber in may, he looked at it and thought about it and moved on...the boat traffic was heavy. thats why id go to MINP. fish really respond to that. also keep in mind that unless you're close to an inlet tides dont matter in the lagoon, just boat traffic and temperature.

Sebastian in Vero is another nice area to find tarpon. Of course if youve got money; go to the keys.
