Talent

You shouldn't need upper echelon SEC talent to dominate S. Alabama. Hell, you don't even need it to keep games close with the best teams, just look at what Franklin did in his first year. Even now, Franklin hardly has upper echelon SEC talent, and his team plays just about everyone tough.

We look inept. That can't just be the talent. At some point our highly paid coaches need to have some accountability.

They went 6-7, beat UConn in a squeaker, and lost a bowl game (and lost to Tennessee, BTW). That's good by Vandy standards, but nothing special. That could still be Tennessee's fate this year.

Franklin still hasn't beaten a team with a winning record. While Vandy is better than they use to be, they're still Vandy!

He took over a non-traditional power whose entire coaching staff had just left, along with a boatload of seniors. They went 4-8 that first year followed by 10-3 and 9-3 (he didn't coach the bowl game, which they won). I don't think that's too bad.

And won 2 conference championships. I don't care what league you're coaching in, if you win championships, it's obvious you can coach.

Probably the least talented UT team I've ever seen. There is not a single player anywhere on the roster that would have started 10 years ago.

A coach is only as good as the people around him. At the SEC level this may be what holds Butch back in the long run. Our dc hopefully has learned since his last turn in the SEC. Oc with a good qb may be alright..

Very true. I am behind our coaches but I wasnt expecting them to have this big of a learning curve. I knew there would be tough times and lessons learned. Glad I am not the coach. Tough postition to be in.

Our team speed is the worst we have had since before Fulmer. Our LB' s are just plain slow. The talent right now is comparable to the early 1980's teams.

I know. The implication the poster was making that Franklin was some miracle-worker in his first year was laughable.

Even last year when they won 9 games, not one of those victories was eye-popping. Hell, their single most impressive game very well might have been the season opening loss to South Carolina.

I think the main thing being overlooked is that it takes a couple years to install all new offense and defense. For example a far less talented team in S. Alabama. Who's had the same coach for 5 yrs. we just need time!!!
