I've seen several shows say we're lacking talent this year. There is no way we have less talent this year than 2years ago. The defense is not good at all and the offense isn't either..

That is ridiculous. Tennessee had 5 players taken in the first 78 picks of the 2023 NFL Draft. Darnell Wright was selected 10th overall. We are not a program that reloads. Primarily due to coaching instability, we have had recent recruiting classes gutted by attrition.

We should be better than what we put on the field last night, however.

I think it is true. Hooker masked some issues last year, and our OL/WR were better. JH didn’t have great recruiting classes at OL/DB/LB his first two years at UT. It is what it is. You can try the transfer portal, but many times those guys in the portal are in the portal for a reason (not always). I think the exodus of players once Pruitt was fired along with very bad recruiting classes at certain positions in 21 and 22 is causing major roster issues right now.

The areas I blame JH directly are WR and QB play. Both are just inexcusable. Our WR play year three in this offense should not be this bad. We should have attracted much better players. I also think we should have searched harder for a transfer dual threat QB (maybe the staff did and settled…maybe they were afraid of convoluting Nico situation… maybe there was no good options…IDK).

We have talent. It's just that it's mainly young and inexperienced. This is a transition year. Give me 8-9 wins and a really healthy performance in the portal this year and I'll be content.

You do realize that he wasn't hired at Tennessee until January 27th, 2021, right? What was he supposed to do in a week?

Idk the answers but I’m not paid millions each yr. 😆

I see the OP’s point as Napier inherited a mess, too. Their QB isn’t good but they demolished us.

Colorado turned over half the roster and according they’re coach, are “about 6 dogs away” from competing for playoffs.

I agree Heup was placed into a difficult situation but BVS is in full force. Is it feasible to have a freshman or soph DB/LB ready to play now?

I’m not a coach but FL started a freshman DB last night. Idk why we didn’t go after him earlier and more often.

But they were all Pruitt recruits. We are in year 3 of Hypes recruits. I am still behind Hype, and I really hope he continues to succeed. I am well pleased with the first 2 years, but this year and next year will really tell us about our hc. And I have not given up on this year. We have played bad at the swamp for years, finish strong and all will be ok. But we are going to have to throw downfield more than we have this year. Why are we not throwing as much down field as we have the previous 2 years??

Talent.
Florida defense is big and play with aggression. I'm here to hit you.
Tennessee defense tried to bump people to the ground.

They must have thought Joe was better than he was (from practice/off season) due to our still sorry passing defense

No, we're not.

Josh Heupel didn't have a class in 2021. He wasn't hired until January 27th... and there had already been an early signing period. You can't call the signing class of 2021 Heupel's class. That would be grossly unfair. There was nothing left on the board by the time he was hired.

Heupel has had two recruiting classes, both of which were signed under the cloud of an NCAA investigation into major violations, which our administration had already admitted to.

There’s seniors EVERYWHERE on this roster. Youth and experience can’t be an excuse this year. Next year should be the reloading year, not this one.

Ok, I agree on 2 recruiting classes, my bad. Hype is in his 3rd year, but really only 2 recruiting years.

According to the talent composite we have slightly more talent this year than last year, but I'd argue we have alot less at the most important position on the field and that cancels it out and then some.
We have more talent on defense and less talent on offense. The new talent on defense is good but inexperienced. The LBs will be outstanding as their experience increases. We really don’t miss the talent we lost on defense except at one DE. On offense, we lost a lot of talent which has not yet been playing. Our returning center has not played and is as good as any in the SEC. We have not been able to replace our right tackle or our left guard with comparable talent. Offensive linemen take more time to develop of any position in football, including QB. Most of our Olinemen are upperclassmen and will not see the field next year because of lost eligibility. Hopefully our younger Olinemen will develop this Fall and the next off season. Our Receivers are talented but have not yet shown they compare to what we lost in the NFL draft. The loss of our QB was our biggest blow. He was exceptional. Our Freshman QB appears to have lots of talent, but he still has to learn the system to be effective In the SEC.Ou kicking game has had a couple of hiccups but they are more talented than those who graduated. We will better on Special Teams than we were last year.
