Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet

Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me
Taxman!

George Harrison, 1966

Taxman Mr. Thief - Cheap Trick 1977

You work hard, you make money
There ain't no on in the world who can stop you
You work hard, you went hungry
Now the taxman is out to get you
You worked hard
And slaved and slaved for years
Break your back sweat a lot
Well, it's just not fair
He hates you, he loves money
And he'll steal your shirt and think that it's funny
Like the Beatles, even Dylan
Now the taxman is out to get you
You worked hard
And slaved and slaved for years
You played
And you played and played for years
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he's a thief)
He's looking for run-in, yeah
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he's a thief)
He's looking for run-in, yeah
You work hard, you make money
There ain't no on in the world who can stop you
You work hard, you went hungry
Now the taxman is out to get you
You worked hard
And slaved and slaved for years
Break your back sweat a lot
Well, it's just not fair
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he's a thief)
He's looking for run-in, yeah
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he's a thief)
He's looking for run-in, yeah

I filed mine a couple of weeks ago electronically with my taxes being automatically deducted from checking account today. I checked, they did get their money.

I did write a check for my 1st quarter 2014 estimated taxes today. So I actually paid the IRS twice today. I would have a drink except I don't drink..

Everybody drinks on tax day.

less than a grand refund from the Feds (already received); just over a grand from the State. Even when I owe the Feds I always get money back from the state.

Withholding tax through payroll is the biggest rip. Prevents people from feeling the tax burden. Most people don't know how much they paid.

Old U.S. Treasury write-up on the history of US tax system:

...Another important feature of the income tax that changed was the return to income tax withholding as had been done during the Civil War. This greatly eased the collection of the tax for both the taxpayer and the Bureau of Internal Revenue. However, it also greatly reduced the taxpayer's awareness of the amount of tax being collected, i.e. it reduced the transparency of the tax, which made it easier to raise taxes in the future...

Not very. If you owed, 5% penalty per month, I believe. Prorated, too. So if it gets in before a month late, it should be even less.

If you're owed a refund, no penalty.

Is it really 5% per month? 60% annually?

I did mine this past wknd while watching the Masters. So I think it should be law that the Masters be scheduled for the wknd before Tax Day. Just sayin. I ended up miscalculating in my head all yr and owed just a tad ovr a grand more so that sucked, but is what it is. Can't stand the inconsistency from yr to yr.

I don't know if this works or not but I always send it in the day of or a day or so before. No matter when I have it ready. I figure there are less chances for mistakes being found or audit due to them being so busy. Less time to deal with each one. Who knows if it works or not but sounds logical to me. Ha!! :p

If u can save, and have a pretty good idea of what you'll pay, don't give them anything. Set it aside and/or invest it so u make money off of it. But u HAVE to be able to keep in mind that taxes haven't been taken out, cause if u don't then pay in.

Anyway I heard a break down the other day of when residents of states start working for themselves...LA residents tax burden stop March sometime end of month, here in TX it was April 12th. The worse were Conn and NJ iirc. Their residents overal tax burden ends in June/July....crazy.
