Down goes Lugar:

Six-term Senate veteran Lugar defeated in Indiana primary

Updated at 8:50pm ET: Republican foreign policy elder statesman Sen. Richard Lugar, 80, first elected to the Senate in 1976, was defeated in the Indiana primary Tuesday by state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who was backed by conservatives ranging from the National Rifle Association to local Tea Party activists to the Washington-based fiscal conservative group the Club for Growth.

Mourdock appeared to be headed for a landslide victory.
Does this help or hurt Romney?

Conservatives who don't like Romney will be more energized but moderates who would have voted for Lugar and who won't vote for Mourland might not split their ticket and vote Romney ... and Ohio could pick the next President.

France rejected austerity measures, pro-union candidate won.

Wisconsin battle lines largely the same. On a smaller scale, of course, but philosophically there are some similarities.

Funny stat that has nothing to do with the topic of the thread:

Walker got more votes running uncontested in the Republican recall primary than the two Democratic candidates got, combined.

I heard this morning on radio that polls show it being 1 percent difference right now, depending on which poll. Supposed to be a squeaker.

Is that not right? I am aware of the controversy, but haven't paid any attention to the recall election.

Yes. Mayor Barrett appears to have barely won the D primary. He was the D nominee in 2010 when he lost to Walker. It's hard to really make a prediction based solely on last nite, but the fact that the two main D candidates didn't combine for as many votes as Walker got (when Walker's supporters has absolutely no reason to go to the polls) cannot be taken as a good sign.

the little I heard was that the union-backed Dem lost the D primary to the guy (Milwaukee mayor) that ran against Walker the first time and lost by 5%. Unions were quick to say they'd switch over to the D winner.

5% is a big number to overcome. Will be interesting. Glad I don't live there.

I've always wondered how the spinmeisters in any campaign figure out how to decide whether to argue they are in the lead, or implore people to support their guy.

If you rely on comparisons like the above to claim you are winning, does that risk people staying home because they figure you don't need them? Does it make people less inclined to donate to the campaign?

And what if you claim to be ahead, and then lose? Does that make you look like you don't know what you are doing or are arrogant, for purposes of next election?

On the flip side, if you say we're behind in a close race, is that like conceding defeat already? Does it make fence-sitters go with the winning team? Hurt contributions because business doesn't want to give money to the loser?
