Things could still change, but as of now we are hearing that the most likely starting line-up is Santiago Vescovi, Josiah James, Keon Johnson, John Fulkerson and Yves Pons. Jaden Springer, E.J. Anosike and Victor Bailey Jr. will all play heavy minutes.
According to people we’ve spoken with lately the guy who has helped himself the most in the last 10 days or so is Bailey who. At the moment he’s considered the hottest perimeter shooter on the team.
Assistant coach Mike Schwartz said on Thursday during a media session that the staff feels like they have five guys; Vescovi, James, Johnson, Springer and Bailey that have ‘point guard like abilities.’ Not necessarily that you’ll see all five of those at the point, but that all are capable of getting the ball and starting the transition game. That’s a big reason that Rick Barnes feels good about his team playing much faster than they did a year ago.
We’ve mentioned here in the past that most around the program consider Vescovi to be the most improved player on the roster. We’re also told that you shouldn’t sleep on James who likes much better than he did at this point a year ago.
Additionally, from what we’re told there’s also the possibility that either Anosike or Fulkerson or both, could elect to return to the team next year depending on what their professional opportunities look like at the end of this season. That’s obviously a long way from being determined, but those decisions could certainly impact the need to add a big in this class.
