Team Talent Composite for 2023

As someone already said, and as I have said in another thread, there is no "figuring out" JH's offense. The wide splits create open space which benefits the run and the pass game. Either you have the personnel to stop it or you don't. That's it. Add the tempo to it and it makes it even tougher on a defense.
Correct, if you can stop the run without loading the box, you are going to give us and most everyone else trouble, otherwise going to be a long day for you most days.

The best thing Tennessee has going for it right now is that we have a coaching staff that has proven it can develop players. The talent level of this squad is much higher now after working with the Tennessee coaching staff. I can't wait for this season. Go Vols!
What we really need to is for the Vols we got drafted this year to show out in the NFL. Put that „it’s the system“ balderdash out to pasture where it belongs

I like the 247 Team Talent Composite idea, but it's generally riddled with errors. Partly because they don't actually know which players are on scholarship and which are walk-ons. Plus, every year I do a spreadsheet of multiple teams and I usually find glaring omissions and erroneous inclusions. I'm running behind this year and have only done my spreadsheet for Georgia and Florida, but I just looked at UGA's composite roster and noticed that they failed to include freshman Kelton Smith because his ranking was missing on their roster. Last year they omitted players from every team I checked.

It's still a nice high-level look at college team talent though and sometimes they go back and correct some of the errors later.
That's hardly "riddled" with errors. It is probably their best effort at accurately evaluating team talent. The ratings of specific players is "riddled with errors". Some 3* are badly underrated. Some 5* are badly overrated. The 4* group is pretty inconsistent. Averaging it out for a roster however seems to give at least a ballpark estimation.

Excluding a player here or there will typically not move the needle much. Evaluating only the players signed to scholarship coming in also won't add significant error when viewing the whole roster.

Agreed. There's not really much to figure out. He spreads a D out and runs tempo. Otherwise they run the same basic sets and plays and blocking schemes seen across CFB.

Two other factors. The Vols have executed very well since Heupel showed up. He is an elite playcaller.

Are these numbers simply from the recruiting classes each team has pulled in, or does it take a look at the actual current roster so it’s subtracted players that have left and players that have transferred in?

There are some outliers, but it is fascinating how that list reflects team quality. From the top 25, most of those teams are close to their actual ranking ability. Tennessee is low, Texas and A&M are too high. UF is a bit high, but has coaching issues. The rest are not far off though.

Actual current roster including players who have transferred in, and subtracting those who have transferred out.

If you look at this data by conference, you see that UVA scores lower than Vandy, i.e., UVA would be bottom of the barrel in the SEC in terms of this Talent Composite. So, I‘m expecting a big win Saturday - something in line with what we did to Vandy last year, or slightly bigger. GBO. Whip the Hoos.

Between the talent differential, our superior coaching and the fact that this is a de facto home game, this should be a laugher Saturday.

Has been updated. Vols have the No. 16 most talented team (up 3 spots from last year). Bama is No. 1 again, UGA No. 2. Last year we outperformed our rank considerably, which I think was about the first time we had outperformed our rank in the 8 or 9 year history of the rankings. Can we do it again?

I
Hopefully we’ll be in the top 5 in the next 2 to 3 years.

Good post. I think Heupel and his staff have a good track record of getting more out of their talent. So, if this is any indicator of what final rankings are at the end of the season, we have yet another case for being confident in what we will put on the field this year.

The most amazing part is that we have as many 5* players committed currently as we have total on the team right now

I actually like the composite. However there is still some error in there. Any team may be plus or minus several spots. They may embarrass us Saturday but I don't think UF is more talented than UT this year. I don't think ND is more talented than Michigan.

I suspect the range is at least plus/minus about 7 spots and maybe as high as 10.

I watched bits and pieces of the Nebraska game... about as much boredom as I could take. They're not more talented than Minnesota. In fact, Minnesota looked faster and more athletic. According to the composite, Nebraska is the #21 most talented team while Minnesota is 56. Those were two equally matched teams. Most of the error is in evaluations of 3* guys vs 4* guys and particularly the lower 4* guys.

I personally want Heupel to keep doing his own evals and taking commits from guys he believes in. I think he can win with the Telanders of the world. I think he will coach them up and get every ounce possible out of their talent. I really don't care if he's ever "ranked" in the top 5 or whatever. But if he keeps winning... he will be and not necessarily because he gets better players. The recruiting sites favor the recruits of successful programs when awarding ratings.
