ESPN.com - NCF - Recap

Tedford: "We've never seen anything like that. That's a pretty impressive atmosphere, there's no doubt about it," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "The environment they create gives Tennessee a real home field advantage."

eh, i thought crowd noise wasn't going to be a factor? not used to that out west, huh?

Ainge: "We all felt disrespected," Ainge said. "This game tonight wasn't just for Tennessee versus California. It was for the South versus the West Coast, the SEC versus the Pac-10."

i like that attitude.

That whole team was running their yappers about how the crowd wasn't going to be a factor and blah blah blah.. I think the crowd took it personally!

The students definitely took that attitude as well. We chanted "S-E-C" a few times. :)

The real sucker is Chris Fowler... not a home-field advantage my butt. :p

I heard the SEC chant. That was pretty funny. I felt sorry for the Cal fans, but not really. :dance2:

For anyone who didn't meet any Cal fans, they were great. Super nice, and really excited about watching a ballgame in Neyland. I was walking behind a few guys with Cal shirts on, and once we got out from under the Spam Can and Neyland was in view one of them said "Now THIS is why we came here! To see college football in a stadium that dwarves others. This is where the games are supposed to be played!"

Excellent crew, I kinda hate we put such a beating on them... then I wake up. :)

The ones I saw seemed pretty relaxed. They probably didn't deserve the beating they took, but us Tennessee fans deserved everything we saw. I wanted 42 points...

Jeff Tedford pre-game:

"We're not worried about the 100,000 people in the stands. We have practiced everyday with crowd noise, so loud that we can't even hear each other talk. I don't think it's possible we could have it any louder than we've had it on the field."

Jeff Tedford post-game:

"We've never seen anything like that. That's a pretty impressive atmosphere, there's no doubt about it," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "The environment they create gives Tennessee a real home field advantage."

Crowd noise was definitely a factor. They had a delay (or two?) and at least two false-starts that I remember. When they were backed up near the student section, it was deafening.

On a related note, the wave got going TWICE while we had the ball. Once right after JC took over at QB. Make some noise for the redshirt freshman to call plays by. Brilliant!

I love every part of what went down tonight. Cal didn't just underestimate the noise and atmosphere. They underestimated the physicality and speed of the SEC. SURPRISE SUCKERS!

The only bad part of the night. Kinda embarassing Ut fans don't know when the wave is appropriate. I wonder do they do the wave, like, when they attend funerals?

You're joking, right? When we did the wave tonight is the ONLY time it is appropriate... when the game is in hand. Otherwise you need to be yelling like heck to help out your team's D.

I disagree. The only time the wave is appropriate is when THEY have the ball. You especially don't want a distraction like that when you are breaking in a frosh QB.

Do you honestly think the players pay attention to the wave? Seriously? It isn't any different than the idiots that YELL while we have the ball... at least while doing the wave those same idiots are having fun.

Remember when Jeff Tedford said our fans wouldn't bother his players....."we will focus on the 11 on the field and not the 100,000 in the stands" ANYHOW, this is one of his post-game quotes

I will do the censoring myself mod........but Tedford, NO DUH!!!!!!

Here is what Cal's starting QB had to say about the crowd..

"It's static noise,'' said Nate Longshore, "You can't hear anything. You go up and down the line, your wide receivers, your running backs, your tight ends, nobody can hear. Nobody.''

There was also numerous chants of "Overrated"

While it is fun to make fun of the other team at any time possible, that's a cheer I'm not really fond of. By chanting that the other team is "OVER-RATED!" you take away from your own team's performance. It's fun, and probably makes the alleged overrated team feel just special, but I don't care much for it because it takes away from your own team's performance, sorta.

Ok, it doesn't, but still. :)

I read that Cal's fans were yelling Pac-10 at our guys during warmups. :post-4-1090547912: :post-4-1090547912: :post-4-1090547912: :post-4-1090547912: :post-4-1090547912:

That is classic.

As i walked back to my car, the Cal fans who had the cojones to not leave before dark, were getting hounded badly. I myself had to throw some jabs.

I dont know about yall, but after the first scoring drive i felt this immense pressure come off my shoulders.

IT IS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL BABY!!!!!!!

It is a lot different when you have a stadium over 75,000. Our stadium is like double their size.

A couple years ago some players and coaches went out of their way in interviews to ask that our home crowd not do the wave while we're on offense. It makes noise and it's distracting. Plus is was a cheer that was cool like 10 years ago.

Also if you read a previous thread that talked about this subject, you've got a bunch of people who disagree with you. It's a entrire crowd participating in making noise, think it might be alittle loud? not just an idiot here or there yelling while we're on offense.
