The wound Vanderbilt coach James Franklin intended to leave open has scabbed over.
Last year Franklin said a tape of Tennessee coach Derek Dooleys post-game speech to his players after the Vols 27-21 overtime win in Knoxville would lead to plenty of talk prior to the rematch Saturday night in Nashville.
Well talk about it next year a lot, Franklin said in 2011. Well talk about it as much as you guys want to talk about it.
At his Monday press conference, a more reserved Franklin veered the other direction.
Ive matured dramatically since that day, Franklin said. As you guys know, we have one of the best hospitals in the United States. So that wound has healed.
Our focus is on Vanderbilt and getting better. If we need any other types of motivation and things like that, then our focus isnt where it needs to be.
Franklin said he would not address or show his Commodores (6-4, 4-3 SEC) any of Dooleys speech in which he said: The last thing I'm going to remind you is that the one thing Tennessee always does is kick the (expletive) out of Vandy.
That served as the lone SEC win for Dooley and the Vols (4-6, 0-6) in the last two seasons.
