Tennessee always kicks the @!** out of Vanderbilt

The wound Vanderbilt coach James Franklin intended to leave open has scabbed over.

Last year Franklin said a tape of Tennessee coach Derek Dooley’s post-game speech to his players after the Vols’ 27-21 overtime win in Knoxville would lead to plenty of talk prior to the rematch Saturday night in Nashville.

“We’ll talk about it next year — a lot,” Franklin said in 2011. “We’ll talk about it as much as you guys want to talk about it.”

At his Monday press conference, a more reserved Franklin veered the other direction.

“I’ve matured dramatically since that day,” Franklin said. “As you guys know, we have one of the best hospitals in the United States. So that wound has healed.

“Our focus is on Vanderbilt and getting better. … If we need any other types of motivation and things like that, then our focus isn’t where it needs to be.”

Franklin said he would not address or show his Commodores (6-4, 4-3 SEC) any of Dooley’s speech in which he said: “The last thing I'm going to remind you … is that the one thing Tennessee always does is kick the (expletive) out of Vandy.”

That served as the lone SEC win for Dooley and the Vols (4-6, 0-6) in the last two seasons.

I hate to say it somebody will get the sht kicked out of them, we will be the one getting the kicking DD will make sure of that, Vandy by 20 didnt think that would happen in my life time, but didnt think we would have junior highschool foot coach in my lifetime either.:banghead2:

Sorry, but I disagree. We play great for a half & then shutdown for whatever reason & lose to Vandy by 10pts. All they have to do is take the lead & TN will go in a shell. But then again, TN is on the road so who knows what will happen? Hope it doesn't come down to a 38 yard FG try for us to win it cause Palardy won't make it.

I respect your point of view and you have plenty of evidence to feel that way. I feel like we will just click finally. Just my feeling

James Franklin will out coach Dooley in this game, because he's just a better coach. If the difference in this game comes down to coaching, we're screwed.

I certainly will not be shocked if the Commodes win or, to put it more precisely, we exceed their longstanding mastery of the art of losing. Unless the entire team mails in their effort, however, I would be surprised to see VU win by the margin you cited. That happens roughly with the frequency of Halley's Comet transiting through our portion of the solar system. Going all the way back to 1926, when Neyland first assumed the reins of our beloved program, the following represents the sum total of Commode victories over the Big Orange:

2005: 24-28
1982: 21-28
1975: 14-17
1964: 0-7
1959: 0-14
1954: 0-26
1948: 6-28
1937: 7-13
1935: 7-13
1926: 3-20 ( Tennessee Historical Scores ). As you can see, the Commodes have won by 10 or more points only 4 times in 86 years, and by 20 or more points only twice (1948 and 1954).

Think I'll expand on my comment about this being close. I don't think Vandy can beat Tennessee, however, I'm quite certain Tennessee can find a way to lose.

You have more talent.
You have more speed.
You have more depth.

Doesn't mean a damn thing in a rivalry game though, and oh yeah, you're their rival.

Like I said, they can't "beat" you, but the attorney can sure as hell lose to them.

Wouldn't shock me a bit if Dooley snatches defeat from the grips of successs late with a blown assignment or piss poor feild position allowed due to stupid penalties.

Very accurate appraisal. And no matter how bad we are, the simple truth is that, given the one-sided nature of this rivalry, our guys do not typically take this game as seriously as the Commodes do. Whether we are up or down, this game usually goes one of two ways: Tennessee jumps out early and slaughters the Commodes or it's a fourth-quarter nailbiter. There is very little middle ground (i.e. 10-14 point margins of victory) and Vanderbilt typically wins about once every ten years (or, to be precise, four times in the last 48 years).

Man I gotta tell y'all in no way do I want Dooley back next year. But, as someone with a background in psychology,to see the decline of Dooley's presence since that celebration has been painful to watch and even more painful for the man to experience I'm sure. He seems to be completely in denial, accusatory and tranqued out medicinally. He helped this program recover stability but is just not an SEC caliber HC obviously. Let's thank he for his contribution and move him on out. At this point I am concerned for him as a human being. He needs to go for his sake if nothing else.

I bet that was a bitter offseason back in 54.

Our Offense is awesome good when things are clicking. But you have to remember our Defense "SUCKS". We did not get a pass rush at all on Missouri Tigers QB & he did his magic on us in the 2nd half. The defense can't tackle or play cover on receivers. You think Vanderbilt will lay down on this game? They will be coming at us for 60 minutes when TN will play for 45 minutes. I hope TN wins & wins BIG but I think the players don't have "confidence" now to win with these coaches.

Tennessee always kicks the @! out of KY until Doofus last year.

I see no reason to ever gaurantee a win against any team as long as he is our coach.

If candy doesn't make mistakes and turn the ball over we will lose. I have a hard time believing that Dooley and the company are going to come to play. I just don't feel like bray or the offense respect Dooley. Bray clearly doesn't enjoy his calls and no one else does obviously. I mean a guy like bray. A natural born competitor doesn't want to lose but now that he feels that Dooley is out he might very well just play like he did against Kentucky.
