Agreed. The chances of UT suddenly becoming the best in the SEC are the same as Vandy vying for the East Title in football.

Now, I know some may think I am trying to bash them and I am not. But there are a lot of holes left to be undone, as shown by last year's disgrace at times. To think everything will suddenly gell into a perfect mold is wishful thinking.

Hey no one thought Aubrun would suddenly have the best defense in the nation, but look what happend there.

who's defense in the SEC is better on paper? you make it sound like we are middle of the pack...???

i just dont get it. the defense is returning 8 starters including players with loads of field time. saying that UT isnt preseason #1 in the SEC on defense sounds like a lack of faith.

is it the schedule? or that you just expect UT to always screw things up. :nono:

In 2003, Auburn D was 3rd in the SEC in Scoring Defense, 5th in pass D, 2nd in rush D....they lost several starters but also returned Rogers, Rosegreen, and others...

The comparison to 2003-2004 for Auburn and 2004-2005 is not a good one.

I am not sure if I would call it a lack of faith nor me wanting to see UT do bad...I am just looking back on what we had last year and how bad we were in numerous games on defense.

Some talk about returning players and such....I am not sure many of these guys will be automatically Al Wilson type players like some do. I know all about our 2-deep in every position depth now.

I predict UT to be middle-of-the-pack in most SEC Defensive catagories next year.

ps. al wilson might be one of the intangibles that will be harder to replace than anything else.

heart goes a long way on and off the field.

And how many of you know that Meyer has dumped the Fullback position at UF.

Do you know that UF's defensive backfield is worse than UT's was last year.
UF is also thin on both lines and at LB.

UF's bigtime back Wynn will be declared academically inelgibile for the 2005 football season baring a miracle.

Even inside UF people are worried about the thin talent this fall.

u still didnt answer my question of who in your mind will be #1 in defense in the SEC?

I think a several teams could be ahead of UT.

The best, imo, in the SEC is LSU. Spears was very good in several games last year but also very off in others. Seniors Williams and Wroten should be just fine up front. I think losing Webster will actually be a positive as he was horrible most of last year. Laundry is arguably the best overall player in the SEC.

Spears was taken by the Cowboys in the 1st round so that show how good he was and don't be fooled the loss of Saban will hurt that team.

Spears had a lot of talent but was slowed by several injuries last year and was helped by a late surge of interest due to the 3-4, 4-3 switch by the Cowboys.

He was taken out of several games last year completely

Coach Fulmer has said recently, and I agree, that we have the best LBs in the SEC and that our Dline has a chance to be the best we've had during his tenure at Tennessee. Jesse Mahelona is an All-American. Last year was basically Harrell's first year and he has looked great this spring. He was just a sophmore last year. He is easily an All-SEC candidate. This will be Turk McBrides breakout year. He was just a sophmore last year learning a new position at DT. He is very talented. In my opinion, Bolden will be a first round pick in the NFL if he stays healthy during his career at Tennessee. Tony McDaniel could have a breakout year if he's back with the team. He too was just a sophmore last year. hopefully Laron harris can finally stay in shape and help out as well. Haralson is All-SEC. Hall is solid and steady. Antonio Reynolds has looked VERY good all spring and has a chance to be very good. Xavier Mitchell looked very good as a freshman. Robert Ayers looked VERY good this spring. This front 7 has a chance to be very, very good and could certainly be the best front 7 in the SEC. There are still some concerns in the secondary. We have Allen and know what to expect from him. Lets not forget that Hefney and Fellows were freshman last year, Hefney was a true freshman starting at CB. They should both be much better. We get Antwan Stewart back who is very talented. I think we have a chance to be greatly improved in the secondary. I'm excited about our defense.

On a related note, Jesse Mahelona made seventeenth on Bruce Feldman's Top 100 players to look out for in 2005. The Flyin' Hawaiian is rated as the best player in the SEC.
