Tennessee hasn’t checked a play all season

Not to upset the secret genius meeting, but most of our plays have two running options and a long to short check down. The QB decisions are after the snap in addition to sideline calls based on D. As for snap count, you might want to note the Florida game last season was the first game they switched up count, and clap. Right now Milton has three counts and a call to delay. He pulled the defense into offsides three times last night on changing the count with a delay. We need to learn to throw and catch. Our offense and count cadence are just fine.
Thank you. It’s glad to know there’s others on this board who get it. I’d also like to point out we “scanned” multiple times - we looked at the sideline and either stayed with the play or checked it.

No offense - but if Hooker was qb last night we score in the 50's and we wouldn't be having this discussion. We have seen elite qb play - hopefully Joe can channel his inner HH next Saturday.
This is a new team. Stop with the HH comparisons. He’s gone. Move on please. If Bryce Young was still there, Bama would’ve won last night. It’s stupid to keep this comparison going. If you think the O would run better with one of our backup QBs then that is a legitimate discussion. Or if you think CJH should’ve recruiting a veteran capable of performing better than Milton in the portal, then that is a legitimate discussion. Constantly comparing JM to a former player though is not a legitimate discussion. We have who we have. People need to move forward.

Yep. One of the reasons he fell in the draft.
That’s not true. It’s because he’s 25 almost 26 and tore his ACL in November

Golesh talked about how hooker had really stepped up last year and had full control over the offense and the plays called, and checked out of plays more often than fans realized

This is exactly what I was comparing against. Hooker approached the line. Scanned the field. Barked out changes.

To date, Joe doesn’t really even look at the field. He looks at the sidelines.

Or he did a few times yesterday.

Could be scheme. Just an observation.

It can't be argued that we had an elite downfield passing team a year ago - it was one of the team's strengths - and now in a game against Austin Peay - not Georgia, not Alabama, --- we had to transition to throwing almost exclusively passes to the flat and swing and screen passes. While I do long for an exciting offense like last years and I do think we probably have a freshman who can deliver that, I just want Joe to step up and play better. He has to play better for us to be successful. If he and the coaches are satisfied with last night's performance, we are in trouble. He does a lot of things really well - he has to be more accurate passing the ball down field if we hope to have a great season comparable to last year.

Lol secret genius meeting, that was a funny one. Yes, I agree that we’ve ran a vanilla offense. However, we have beat the pulp out of many teams doing so over the years, even dating back to 70-3 over UL-Monroe (and others prior, that’s just the first one I remember making my eyes really go wide). A vanilla playbook against an FCS opponent should never be the issue for a Top 10 team.

However, commentary aside, I do appreciate you providing/pointing to actual counter-evidence. I’ll have to painfully re-watch the tape. Nothing I want more than Joe to be successful, just trying to figure out what the actual issue (with Joe, which I should have clarified better) is, as it seems to change. Was definitely a maddening amount of drops from WRs yesterday. I don’t blame that on Joe at all.

Think we can all agree that we want the same thing here lol! Appreciate the time you took. Go Big Orange!

Lol I’ve never said we don’t check plays nor knocked Joe or Hendon for not making their own checks; although someone on here said Hooker did more himself than we realized. That’s how a lot of colleges run their systems. Think we all agree on Go Big Orange!

I hear you. VN is just a weird place, right now, that seems to be questioning CJH. Go Big Orange!

Haha and I should have been much more clear in my commentary, but was on the plane back home. My brevity got me! I do appreciate your response and understanding. But either way, my wording definitely had NegaVol tone in retrospect, when none existed internally.

We’re all on the same page: we want the cat skinned. We just see different ways to do so. However, CJH has done more than enough in such a short time to earn the fanbase’s trust.

Go Big Orange!

Something has been off on the play calling. The bad play doesn't all seem to be on Milton, WRs, etc. I just don't see a lot of downfield or even center of the field pass play calls.

Maybe we are hiding our "playbook" but still you would think we would have a few just standard center of the field/downfield pass plays. It was especially bad against Austin Peay because I did see us throw some slants against Virginia but 0 against Austin Peay.

To me, the slant pass is one of the hardest plays in CFB to defend but yet coaches seem to NOT call it very much. Florida State and USC Trojans used to do it a lot and Alabama under Kiffin, I think called a lot of slants.

Some predictable calls, on 3rd and 1, what do you think they were going to call last night? I am guessing run up the middle. AP was selling out on that last night. run up the middle or bubble screen.... More unpredictability play calling will go a long way, which I am expecting to see vs UF. Along with Mays being back.

Yeah, only two slant calls against UVA and none against Austin Peay. No post routes, etc. Play calling has been very odd.

Wasn't the touchdown to Keaton a slant? The turnover on downs was a slant to Thornton too. What is your definition of a slant?

My only criticism is that we have shown and run the same play multiple times on 3rd and short, only to be outnumbered and stuffed. Just in the first two games.

But I’m sure the coaches see this and will adjust.
