Tennessee Lady Vol News

Justified, very justified. But Tennessee will be back in the poll, soon enough.

exactly.

They were playing dismally and lest we forget,,,our track record in recent years of holding a lofty spot will make them quick to correct a seeming oversight. . . They may shoot the gun and the bullet may hit the spot, but it has not left a hole.

Despite all the negativity, I don't get a sense that the slow start has to do with dissention. When you have such a spectacularly team oriented and lovable leader such as Horston (great in this clip by the way) and a new star that has repeatedly said that she loves being here, something good is going to come out of this.

I know all the returning players have had to make major adjustments due to the influx of talented players. I imagine this has been most true for Tamari. It must be hard to know how you fit in on offense when you have this brilliant new player zipping all around you creating shots with ease whereas Tamari's game more relies on constantly struggling to get in good position while heavily guarded and hope that someone throws a great pass too her. That would discourage me, at least at first. I remember that KJH has said that a major factor of how well Tamari plays relies on building her confidence. I imagine the influx of post players with smooth offensive skills has been a challenge for her confidence. While Tamari making 10 points a game is important, we need her defensive engagement even more. She is a difference maker on defense when she is playing hard, and the main reason why we have held teams to such low FG percentages the past two seasons. It seems like there is no greater confidence builder for her than when she starts blocking shots. The crowd gets into it, the other team loses their confidence and starts altering their shots, and Tamari becomes the basketball beast that she can be. In the video, the players repeatedly mention that they have left the previous games behind and are now just focused on the present. The EKU game was a good restart for Tamari. We can be a good team without her but we need her in order to be a great team.

Slow start hasn't been because of Horston or Jackson after that almost every other player has to take some blame.

Agree.. that's the reality right now. One has a bad night or both at the same time, then who is going to take over?

Puckett, to me, is the player that really needs to step up. We need her to come in and be engaged offensively both inside and out. She’s wanting to just shoot the 3 the last few games. Would love to see her get some of those short jumpers she’s money on.

What’s so frustrating is she did this in NINE minutes, NINE. Imagine would she could do in 25 if she gave consistent effort
If we got the production we got out of the five in this game problem winning games would disappear. Your getting 13 and 13 plus and 4 which is thirty points out of a three player rotation. Just me but my starting five is Key, Franklin, Horston, Jackson, and Powell. they are working 150 a game at least. I backing in with Darby, Puckett, Hollingshead, and Walker of Miles and I am favoring Miles right now. I like Puckett over Suarez cause she comes in and at least tries to get in the team flow whereas Marta becomes a one on one bull in a China shop player. I would go with just nine against the elite teams others would get playing time against the 200 ranked teams.

Anyone that didn't listen to Vol Calls Coach Harper was on and said practice would be Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Off Thursday and then practice on Friday and Saturday. She said all four practices would be devoted exclusively to getting better on defense. She said this is where the team needs to grow and they hoped to make a lot of progress in this area this week. She also talked about using a lot of data from previous games to see what groups on the court were winning and losing when they were playing together. So hope to see a lot better team and probably will see more of players that have played well together on the court a lot more Sunday.

So, who do you see getting more minutes from the subs?

Hard to say what Coach Harper will do as she has already let players get more minutes for play that has been unacceptable according to data. There are no stats or data to protect the ones I'm talking about. Just my opinion based on the stats you would have to see Franklin, Puckett, and Hollingshead elevated in some way. I think Horston, Jackson, Key, Powell, and Franklin are your starters just for the bigger defensive advantage alone. Darby is a three point shooter, but all opponents know this have been overplaying her and she isn't getting the shots just 30 in 8 games which doesn't benefit you when she is averaging 5.4 a game. I am sure Franklin with extended minutes would be averaging more and defending better. The rolling rotation of Key, Franklin, Hollingshead and Puckett seems like where we should be headed. Horston and Jackson the wings with Darby and Walker playing some backup minutes. Powell with Miles are you point guards, but you have to think about Horston running the show in the half court she just makes things happen with the ball in her hands.

I will be as interested as anyone to see what Coach Harper does this Sunday. If I had to guess I would say I doubt we see very little of the forty minute game where either one of the other of Jackson or Horston are not on the court. Va Tech is a very good team we may need the top six to play 160 minutes of this game would be a big win for us.
