Tennessee Lady Vol News

I definitely see the benefits of subbing when you can go ten deep, which we should be able to do even easier with no drop-off after first year due to her recruiting. The place where it seems ludicrous is as you say the 90 second subbing, which she does at the beginning of the game. It takes at least 90 seconds at the start of the game to get into the flow, so right when the first team does that she is subbing the next group who are not in the flow. It means that no one is the flow for at least 3 minutes. I don't know how this helps us either conceptually or through observation.
A side comment regarding amount of playing time is I don't remember a player who is as fast and athletic as Latham get in such quick foul trouble in almost every game. It usually is the players who are guarding someone more athletic than them who have this issue. It is really remarkable how little time she really gets to play. She is a player that really needs the game experience to reach her potential, as she is not close to it yet. Many of her fouls are away from the goal and are how to grasp why she did it. Granted, some are not close to flagrant, but I sure hope she improves in this area. It is a waste for her to be on the bench so much.
Completely agree with Latham! I think her potential is so high, and I also understand why her minutes may be fewer given her propensity for fouling. I do think she has improved over the course of the season and had some nice, key plays against UConn (as I think every single player did), so I hope we see a huge jump from her in her second year here. I just think she has so much raw potential.

Warren Nolan's updated predicted results have us in a 3-way tie for 6th place in the SEC with Ole Miss and Vandy. In that scenario, if we beat Ole Miss, Ole Miss would win the tie-breaker with a 2-1 record against the other teams (having beaten Vandy twice), and we would be the 7-seed with a 1-1 record (and Vandy would be 8th at 1-2).

That would put us up against the 10-seed, which would be the loser of today's Alabama-Mississippi St. game based on Warren Nolan's projections. Then we'd go against #2, which would be Texas (winning the tie-break against LSU if they beat them at home in a couple of weeks).

Edit: They have us losing to Kentucky, but if we won that game (and everything else stayed constant based on these projections), we'd tie them for 5th in the standings and get the tie-break. Then we'd get the winner of the 12/13 game (Auburn/Florida) followed by 4-seed Oklahoma.

The pattern has gotten to where Cooper, Spencer, Whitehorn, Spear and Spearman push 30 minutes a game or go over. Depends on whether they can stay out of foul trouble. Boyd, Latham, and Hollingshead are starting to see an increase in playing time. Puckett and Darby have lost minutes. A ten player rotation is simply what more than half the teams play in WCBB basketball. So the 20 minute thing has lost merit you play more if you produce more and less if you don't basically like any other team.

The one big sore spot that still stands out is the subbing which I consider just a little to quick not of fan of 90 seconds. If a player can't go hard for three minutes not in good enough shape. The fact that I am not a fan of the quick subbing doesn't mean it won't work as we do seem to get an edge out of it with most teams in the second half of the game. Staying close in the first half has been more of the problem in several of the games.
Which games weren't we close in the first half?

Haven't been down double digits but once, but against a top ten team really needs to be less than five. Being down 7 to a top ten team is to much it appears and we were down 7 to LSU lost by 2. Down 7 to Oklahoma lost by1. Down 9 to Sc lost by 7. Down 3 to UConn won by 4. Only down five at Texas lost by 4. Down by 11 to Vandy lost by 1. We've won every second half, but not enough to win the game except when we were down by 2.

I don't think they generally sub that fast with our top players. I have no problem with Spencer and Coop getting a 90 second breather every 3 to 5 minutes and right back in.

I would love to play Oklahoma again. We are so much better now than we were when we played OU, and I think the team would love a rematch given how that game ended. It we do lose just one more in the regular season (LSU or UK), I think that winning one against a rated opponent in the SEC Tourney would really assure us being a 4th seed in the NCAAs if not higher with home games for the first two rounds.

If I were in charge I'd have the first two groups go 3.5-4 minutes each to start the game, which would hopefully give them time to get over the initial early-game breathlessness and get them into focus and flow. Subbing 90 seconds the rest of the game would be fine, but I have from the start believed a bit of a longer stretch at the beginning would potentially produce good results.

But what do I know? (Answer: quite a bit about athletes' bodies and minds work under stress)

You'd be wrong,,,our mass subs (4-5 player subbings) average 1minute 3seconds
we only sub 3 or less subs in the end of qtrs or at the end of a close game

You also have to think that the team is continuing to gel and playing better togetheras the season goes on. They looked their most complete and competitive against Uconn because of the substitutions. They were able to get solid paint points because we have the likes of Tess, Sarah, and Jewel and the defense has to play them honestly which opens up driving lanes. Those paint points go away if you don't have perceived shooters on the floor. Everyone seems excited about Civil and Prawl coming in next season, but I'm wondering who is going to be consistent players that can make the three. This offense works when the floor is well spread and we lose 4 known shoots to graduation this year.

they can both attack the rim and that will open it up for shooters to develop

Has anyone heard any update on Jordan Horston? I just saw this Reddit thread saying she was injured during an AU game and that it was likely a leg or knee. She apparently was screaming in pain, was taken to the locker room and never returned. 😪

Here's the whole thing I read:

Man my heart breaks to hear that, she has always been a pretty healthy player. Prayers it’s not too serious, she was coming into her own last season but needed a better coach.

I believe she was tops in the league for small forward shooting percentage.

I looked around on social media late last night and all I saw was where Jordy retweeted another player who asked for prayers for her. No official news. It's a very scary situation, and the nightmare of offseason play. Apparently her reaction was so severe they cut away to commercial and never showed a replay.

Question.

How many coaches have beaten Geno in their debut season at their school? Truly a feat imo.
Per an AI search (which claims it’s latest info is 10/23) the first-year coaches who have defeated Geno Auriemma are:
  1. Muffet McGraw - In her first season as head coach of Notre Dame in 1987, she led her team to a victory over UConn.
  2. Kara Lawson - In her first season as head coach of Duke in 2020, she also managed to secure a win against Auriemma's UConn team.
  3. Kim Caldwell - 2025. [Added this myself]
I wouldn’t vouch for the accuracy.

I’m pretty sure any number of Husky Nans monitor the veracity of internet claims regarding UConn.
