beaten Miami that year.

NOW, if you're a Bammer... You DEFINITELY count that as a NC year!

Was there too. Half my family was in Orange and the other Half maze and blue.

We sat in a thick group of MI fans what a sweet victory!

I was at the LSU game and this was the one that essentially launched Saban into the coach we now know and despise. Fulmer and crew really blew it in so many ways in that game. It was a chance for CPF to take a firm grip on the SEC, but instead allowed Saban the foot in the door. The rest is history. The win against Michigan was classic and nice consolation. But, I doubt many Vol fans know just how costly this loss was in the larger scheme of things.

That said, Miami had an excellent team that year. But, I think UT would have won the Rose Bowl.

All Fulmer had to do was beat LSU and he'd still be at the helm today. He would also be mentioned on the level of Spurrier

I watched the Tennessee-Michigan game on my honeymoon in Las Vegas. We were at the ESPN Zone and we were litterally the only people wearing orange in that place. On the way in we were laughed and booed at, by the 50 or so Michigan fans. After the game was over I was walking out and there was utter silence, so me being me, loudly asked where all the Michigan fans went. They all just put their heads down and I got drug out the door by my beautiful wife. One of my favorite games. Go Vols!

Great game but it was so Bitter Sweet. The entire time we were spanking them I was thinking what we should be doing that to Miami.

That SEC Championship game still leaves me a little bitter all these years later. That 2001 squad was the most talented team Fulmer ever had IMO.

In the land of what ifs, if we had taken care of business that year, how would the decade have been different?

No 2005?

No 2008?

No Kiffin?

No Dooley?

I still believe that Fulmer would have had to ultimately make a dynamic hire as OC and would have had to deal with the lack of discipline in the program. But we might have avoided the dumpster fire.

Recruiting is what killed Fulmer: He lost West TN, then the Carolinas and even Georgia was bailing on him.

I was at the UT-LSU SECC game in 2001. The radio call-in show (listening going home) told the story.

One of our offensive linemen said referring to their defensive linemen (and I quote) "They were like mountains - you couldn't move them". Keep in mind that we had 2 - that's right 2 - 1st round draft picks in Haynesworth and Henderson that these practiced against - or did they?

My theory was that the pads weren't on enough during the end of the season and our O-line guys got kinda soft. That and too much reflection on the UF victory the week before (first there in 30+ years) and some serious fumbles/ints made for a very disappointed Vol army on its way home.

I said at the time that Fulmer and Co would probably never get over that loss - and they did not. Especially since they beat them during the regular season and K Washington set a #2 SEC receiving record.

My father in law ( die hard MI fan) use to give me grief about this game. Said Fulmer was trying to run up the score and should have pulled Clausen. Fulmer low class blahh blahh..

What do yall think after watching it again? Why was Clausen in this game until the very end?

Honestly I doubt we beat Miami that year. No one was. The 01 Miami team was probably the best college football team of all time.
They were good for sure but the absolute best team I ever saw on a football field was the 95 Nebraska team....They were a wrecking machine....Ask florida

your talking 2007. Had he won versus LSU in 2007 SEC CG, he would still be the coach even with a losing season in 2008. That would have saved his job and given him time to recover from 2008.

Only way winning 2001 would have made difference is if everything after that were better than how it turned out. JMO
