Tennessee on front page of ESPN

Doesn't excuse, but I have to shade him a little for bad luck. (Maymon, Hubbs)
He's shown at least some effort towards change this season.
Needs to recruit some consistent jump shooters, fewer athletes.
I'd give him his 5 if we're just going to hire another unproven.

I agree 100%. CCM was a victim of Pearl's immediate success. A lot of uninformed fans believed that since Pearl was successful in year one, that Martin should be too. Pearl's early success is the exception, not the rule, and more often than not, a first-year coach is going to struggle. Many times, more than CCM did in year one.

Martin has not shown a great deal of improvement, but as you said, he is learning on the job, and that isn't really his fault. He has improved the results each season, and if we make the dance this year, he'll have done it again, even if in underachieving fashion.

I'm in the camp that believes Tennessee can do better for a coach, but I also believe the administration has to want to do better. Their financial commitment to every coaching search in history suggests that they are content with mediocrity unless they find lightning in a bottle (ala Pearl in the '05 search). Only when they have turned a small investment into a gargantuan return, will they funnel more money into sustaining that investment.

If the options are keep CCM for 2 more seasons to prove it, or fire him and rehire another unproven, wet-behind-the-ears replacement now, I say keep him. I don't mind pulling the plug now if it means admitting your mistake and spending money to fix the problem by hiring a proven commodity.

All quotes after win at Alabama:

Martin: "The 1-3-1 I just felt like I've been looking for something to change it up for our guys. I felt like with 1-3-1 you can't make a direct pass. With a 1-3-1 there are not many direct passes. You gotta go over the top. That probably threw Alabama off. Probably last thing they were expecting"

McRae: "We really don't like the 2-3 zone a whole lot, but we have been going over the 1-3-1 a lot in practice. I think that Coach Martin was surprised at how well it worked. I think that Alabama was surprised too."

Richardson: "In the 1-3-1 we have a lot of length and we shut down easy passes and didn't let them get in the lane easily. It was nice to be able to switch it up a little bit. I think that we were so good at it tonight because we have been practicing it a lot the last couple of weeks. I think this is the first time we have started it in a game. I was surprised at how well it worked. It was a good thing for us and gave us a lot of momentum."

It has virtually vanished since then except in the Florida game where Tennessee kept Florida from scoring from the field in the seven minutes it was used. ???????

Afraid I had missed something the last 3 or 4 days. Good to see we are still beating this horse.

My only wish would be that Mike Hamilton was somewhere near so that he could take the brunt of this fiasco. The alternative is Cheek.

The old dead horse will jump up and bite you in the arse in the next couple of weeks!

Nah the horse that will bite us is the fact we waited till we were firmly against the wall(AGAIN) b4 we start showing a sense of urgency to make the dance. The only difference is this year the likelihood is slightly better.

It's just hard to watch every game with uncertainty. I always find myself scratching my head at calls that do not work. I heard one time a coach can account for about 15 points in a basketball game. With the number of games we have lost by a slim margin compared to the effort we have on the floor, it's a shame we are a bubble team. We should be talking about what seed , under 8, we are going to be. Not hoping we squeak into a play in game????

BBB. I say this because I do not want another project coach. Dooley, Martin, who's next?? Pearl is proven, he is a high energy coach who puts players in the best situation to succeed. The players we have here would probably tell you they came to UT because of his success even if it was a year after his departure.

I'm not a Pearl fan, I'm a UT fan. I just feel with our budget in basketball, this is our man to bring us back to excitement. We can look around but please no more projects. They have proven themselves in all the wrong ways.
