Doesn't excuse, but I have to shade him a little for bad luck. (Maymon, Hubbs)
He's shown at least some effort towards change this season.
Needs to recruit some consistent jump shooters, fewer athletes.
I'd give him his 5 if we're just going to hire another unproven.
I agree 100%. CCM was a victim of Pearl's immediate success. A lot of uninformed fans believed that since Pearl was successful in year one, that Martin should be too. Pearl's early success is the exception, not the rule, and more often than not, a first-year coach is going to struggle. Many times, more than CCM did in year one.
Martin has not shown a great deal of improvement, but as you said, he is learning on the job, and that isn't really his fault. He has improved the results each season, and if we make the dance this year, he'll have done it again, even if in underachieving fashion.
I'm in the camp that believes Tennessee can do better for a coach, but I also believe the administration has to want to do better. Their financial commitment to every coaching search in history suggests that they are content with mediocrity unless they find lightning in a bottle (ala Pearl in the '05 search). Only when they have turned a small investment into a gargantuan return, will they funnel more money into sustaining that investment.
If the options are keep CCM for 2 more seasons to prove it, or fire him and rehire another unproven, wet-behind-the-ears replacement now, I say keep him. I don't mind pulling the plug now if it means admitting your mistake and spending money to fix the problem by hiring a proven commodity.
