Look, I love the Lady Vols dearly, and I think Pat Summitt may well be the best college basketball coach, regardless of gender, in the country, but let's not bring men vs. women into this. In all practicality, an above-average Division II men's program could beat the Lady Vols. That's not a matter of skill, it's a matter of size and physicality and athleticism. This is not sexism, although I'm sure some would see it as such.

As far as the Texas game goes, I will be happy if we keep the Longhorns' margin of victory under 20. But that's okay. It's not realistic to expect Pearl's boys to be able to compete with quite possibly the best team in the country. The talent simply isn't there. I'm not saying it's hopeless; Lofton would have to score 30+ on 15 for 20 shooting, and Texas would have to have 25+ turnovers. And I love this team, I really do. But again: a NIT bid would be a great success; an NCAA bid should make Bruce Pearl Coach of the Year on a nationa lelvel.

On a related note, I actually got a chance to speak to Coach Pearl and his family on Friday. He's a class act. I wished him well next weekend. I also told him that I see alot of similarities between his first few months and the first few months of the Rick Barnes Era at Texas.

Barnes also had to take over a program at which football rules the roost. There is a tremendous amount of excitement at TN, currently, as there was at Texas when Barnes took over.

Ironically, I saw him first. I was actually going to ask him what he thought the score would be between the Men's team and the Lady Vols. (I doubt I would have gotten a true answer but I didn't think it would hurt to hear his opinion.) Right about that time his daughter walked up wearing a Lady Vol sweatshirt so I dropped it.

In response to the above poster, the Lady Vols would be nowhere near 30 points of the TX men. Speed, athleticism and strength aside, whom on the Lady Vols would be guarding 7-foot, All-American, Lamarcus Aldridge?

I'm still trying to figure out who's going to guard him on our mens team. :dunno:

Ok, after watching the first 20 minutes of the TX/Duke game, I think I'm going to adjust my prediction down. :bad: I wish we had a point guard. OR, someone that could defend a jump shot.

Now, I hope TX beats TN. Of course it would have been better for TN (win or lose) to play an undefeated TX next week. Sorry we couldn't hold our end of the bargain. Good luck next week.

Texas closed within 5 points and then Coach K stepped on the accelerator. That was a heck of a performance by Duke.

Put Pat Summitt on the bench next to Coach Pearl 1 week prior to the Texas game and I garentee a toss up. She's that good.....Dan4vols

After seeing Texas getting smacked down by Duke today, I have to say it was an ingenius move by Tennessee to schedule Texas right after their Duke game. Perfect timing for a let down loss for Texas. After the trouncing today, it may take them a while to recover. On the other hand they might be really mad, and looking to beat up on their next opponent as a form of revalidation. Hopefully we've caught them while they are down, and we don't let them up.

For the record I'm afraid Texas is going to win, but we are probably catching them at the best possible time for an upset. I can't wait to watch.

They looked really beatable today, no doubt about that.

I dont think I would want to play them next though, doesn't seem to me like they are gonna be in a very good mood.

Today deflated their ego some no doubt.

If we play our best game, I think we have a slight chance. After the final score I would say at least within 10. Look at the bright side if we win we might pop up in the top 25 in basketball. GO VOLS GO! :fworks:

We have really, really crappy guard play. Our strength is obviously on the inside; however, we don't have guards to feed the big men.

I didn't think that we were a Top 5 team; maybe Top 15. We were definitely exposed today. If Coach Pearl is smart, he'll press the TX guards all over the floor. Hell, I'd try to quicken the pace of the game.

Anyway, I still believe TX will win but I want to retract my 20+ margin on the original poll. I think it will be well within single digits.

Thanks for the update RBC, I haven't gotten to see Texas play yet this year so I wasn't sure exactly what their strengths and weaknesses were.

By the way, I did hear the other day that Tennessee won the last two times they played the #1 team in the country (not that Texas will be #1 now). Can anyone confirm this or know who we played? I think it must have been in the 70s or earlier.

]In SEC play, Tennessee is first in scoring offense (86.2 points per game), assists (18.5 per game), steals (11.75 per game) and turnover margin (plus-9.5 per game). UT ranks second in assist/turnover ratio (1.30 to 1), second in scoring margin (18.8) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (40.7).

Ray Mears beat #1 ranked South Carolina on the road once in the opening game of the season.

We also beat Kentucky when they were #1 sometime in the 90s. The game when we were down by 3, got to the foul line, made the first, missed the second intentionally and got the rebound, made the basket and got fouled - AND then made that foul shot and won by 1 point. Unbelievable finish.

Then we played the 'cats later on in the season and lost like 101-40 or something. :disappointed:

I agree, we'll have to pull off a miracle here to get a win.  However, size-wise, they really don't have much of an edge.  In terms of height, we actually match up perfectly even on paper.  (Giving up only 1 inch at F, getting it back at G).  They do seem a little "bigger," though.

I'm excited about this team, but let's not all get too overwhelmed.  We'll be really good in a couple of years, but for now, let's just enjoy "fun" basketball and hope for a few upsets along the way.

Oh, V4L, you gonna be here for the game on the 27th?

Yeah, I'll be back! Probaby be the only home game I'll get to check out this year.

Wasn't that Corey Allen that got that rebound?? I don't remember them being #1 then, but maybe they were.

I think it was Corey Allen... wonder where he is these days?

I'm not going to swear Kentucky was #1, but thats a game I can think of where we beat a really good team. Our resident 'cat fan might know.
