Tennessee Practice 9/9

WTF....I thought that everybody was making some stupid kind of joke until I watched the video. Is that somebody pretending to be Peterman, or is he really 12 years old?

Probably just a scout team player that grabbed a spare jersey.

Has Sutton returned a single punt this year? It seems to be a fair catch party.

It sounds crazy, but it's because the closer our defense is to midfield, the better they play. Thats where they force the majority of punts, so he never has that much room to work with.

Also for all you braniacs, there's clearly 2 petermans in that shot. The obvious real one who looks like a normal human being, and the short stumpy one who obviously forgot to wash his jersey.

I would rather see Jacob Carter returning punts going forward. Carter did a nice job back there last year in limited opportunities 7/65 yards. Jacob isn't likely to break one but he is sure handed and has a knack for getting past the first wave.

Sutton's fair catches so far this season have been at the 18, 22, 26, 30 x 2, 35, 38 x 2.

It's possible but seemingly doubtful that CBJ instructed Sutton to just catch the ball in the first two games since a few extra yards wasn't to important in those games. The way tacklers are diving at knees these days I would rather not risk injury to our best cornerback.

It isn't Cam's fault the 10 guys in front of him can't block the opposing punt team. Have you paid any attention to the number of defenders in his face when he caught those fair catch punts???

Not sure who your question is directed to but you're right it doesn't appear that Cam has had much of a chance. I don't think anyone is really complaining about Cam just making observations. Personally I'm happy with a solid fair catch from a punt returner. My concern with Cam as a punt returner is benefit vs risk. Jacob can do just as good and we don't risk losing our best defensive player.

That's a reasonable worry but if the coaches thought he could do equally well he'd be back there more. Has Carter been injured?

Very good point. Maybe someone can fill us in on Vic's status? We heard about his return game all spring and summer.

Jones talks about "hidden yardage" in special teams all the time. To me, there are 2 things at play with Sutton's fair catches and lack of returns to this point:

1. He absolutely is coached to field the ball to prevent losing 10-15 yards of field position due to an unfavorable bounce/roll which you're sure to get from punts. He's preventing losing "hidden yardage".

2. The blocking on our punt return team has been very poor. On virtually every one of his fair catches, he has been immediately surrounded by USU and ASU players with no room to move, much less actually run.

I would like someone other than Devrin return some kicks.

Amen to that. Dervin has absolutely zero vision. He is the most over hyped, under performing return man we've ever had. I know the rest of the guys need to help him more but dang.
