Some of our hitters need to spend some serious time in the batting cage. They will swing at anything. Some really poor at bats in that inning.

So, here we are, first game of the NCAA Tournament, this is big, this counts, and you want a good beginning. The atmosphere is different, and the crowd is probably bigger. Probably a good idea to let your freshman pitcher get acclimated a bit, before pitching. Get a nice big lead, then a little less pressure, and hopefully less nerves, and better pitching.

I would imagine the staff closely studied how each of the pitchers was looking today and determined Payton's stuff was looking better to kick things off. Sure, it would have been great if Karlyn had gotten the nod, but we also have to remember WHOLE TEAM PSYCHOLOGY is a factor, too. The staff has to be confident the whole team is feeling confident. Payton inspires confidence.
