Christion Abercrombie, the Tennessee State linebacker who collapsed on the sideline Saturday and underwent emergency surgery for a head injury, is showing daily signs of improvement, his uncle said Tuesday during a prayer vigil on campus.

"It's been a hard time, but we're going to get through it," Kevin Richardson said, according to the Tennessean. "God is here with us and Christion. He knows it, and he's going to be just fine. He is improving daily, and we're looking forward to seeing more from him."

Well of course. Can't allow any impermissible benefits for a guy who will, almost certainly, never again be a "student-athlete." Think of the unfair advantages that TSU will reap if this kid's immediate medical and long-term care are supported by the kindess of strangers.

He was injured while playing during a sanctioned team event. Every school has insurance policies covering the athletes (and coaches) which would cover his medical costs.

While it seems like a nice thing to do given the seriousness of the injury, I don't blame the NCAA for squashing this. It's definitely a slippery slope and not something that they probably have the bandwidth to monitor.

Those policies do not cover long term care, which he seems likely to need.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The mother of the Tennessee State linebacker who collapsed on the sideline during a game says her son has had some body movement she calls "baby steps" as he remains in critical condition.

Staci Abercrombie said at a news conference Wednesday that the family is asking for prayers as they hope for a full recovery for her son, Christion. She said they've been playing different music for her son, including gospel, and seen him respond by raising his hand or rubbing her nails during different songs.

"So those are the positive signs that we're seeing," she said.

The linebacker went to the sideline during the first half of the Tigers' loss to Vanderbilt last Saturday. He told trainers he had a headache, then required oxygen on the sideline before being taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a head injury for emergency surgery. He is in the hospital's neurological intensive care unit.

Looking into the matter, one of the gofundme accounts was set up be a daughter of a TSU coach, and the other was set up by a local resident of Nashville not directly affiliated with either TSU or Vandy.

I could understand some concern having a staff member or immediate family member of a TSU employee doing anything separate of school sanctioned options.

I could see it either way as far as a private individual or group not affiliated with TSU.

There are of course other issues then simply medical expenses of course. To my understanding, his family isn't from the Nashville area, so they're either staying at the hospital and/or having to rent a hotel room.

Every day one or more family members are with him at Vanderbilt, that's a day that they aren't able to go to work or whatever they do for a living. That can have an impact on rent or house payments, utility bills, all sorts of stuff.

Even if TSU covers any and all medical related expenses down to the last penny, this could still be a very damaging burden for the family going forward.

That and as bamawriter pointed out, while most schools are generally able to cover medical expenses in the short term, there's no guarantee that the can or will do so down the road, assuming he pulls through. He's good right now, but a year or two from now, if he pulls through, TSU may be unable or unwilling to offer any help at that point.

Christion Abercrombie to be released from Vanderbilt hospital on Wednesday

Injured Tennessee State football player Christion Abercrombie will be discharged from Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Wednesday and transported to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, according to TSU officials.

TSU coach Rod Reed reportedly visited Abercrombie on Monday, saying that the linebacker was able to open his eyes, squeeze the coach’s hand and smile:

So happy to see that he has made really positive progress. I hate to see any player, from any team get hurt.
