Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

I'm all for Cal staying at UK. Barnes owns him for the most part and his giant contract is a millstone around Kentucky's neck. If he goes I hope they have to pay the 60m dollar buyout.
The problem is the SCOTUS approved payments to athletes today. UK and Memphis State will be back in no time.

Actually, they didn’t. They said too that athletes should be issued Laptops, etc. never mentioned payment. They will get that to eventually, though. And, actually KY politicians are against the paying of players and hasn’t done anything to move towards it, apparently that has caused Cal to be frustrated.

That would actually hurt them. UK has paid players for 60 or 70 years. coRuppt Arena wasn't named that because they ran a clean program. If everyone can openly pay players then that's one more UK advantage gone.

As for the kids in my area...
Colin Porter is a C/O 2023, 5-11 PG who has kind of been on the national scene to some degree since 7th grade. He’s played against a Bronny James in some national tournaments and showcases, for example. Started for the high school team, here, as a freshman, and was the 16th Region Tournament MVP as a freshman, last year for a team that went 33-0. Averaged 17.8 ppg and was 2nd team All-State as a SO, this year. Not sure if he is an SEC-level player, yet, or not. The fan in me wants to say that he is because his instincts and vision are just so far advanced for a kid his age, but the part of me that wants to keep things in perspective is possibly too cynical with regards to his true ability in anticipation of not getting my hopes up too much.
Just as a follow-up, Colin Porter has recently received offers from Marshall, Morehead St., Lipscomb, and Akron, and over the past week, he has received calls from Cincinnati, Louisville, Western Kentucky, and Virginia. He UOVed UVA, today. He was seen in a tournament held in our school's gym, last weekend by Tony Bennett, Bob Huggins, and a whole host of other reps from D1 coaches.

I was trying to keep my personal hype reserved for fear of just seeming unrealistically optimistic, but I'm pretty excited that he is getting some serious high-major attention.

Tennessee’s coaching staff, including head coach Rick Barnes, will be rotating between Birmingham this weekend where adidas is launching its July session with a huge tournament, Cartersville, Ga. where UnderArmour is conducting a national tournament at the huge Lakepoint Complex there. There is also a non-shoe company affiliated event that will take place in Atlanta at the same time that the Vols’ staff will cover.

NIKE is doing things differently this month. Instead of conducting multiple tournaments in multiple locations and venues, they’re creating a sort of ‘mini-bubble’ in North Augusta, S.C., annual home of the Peach Jam, generally the most hyped event of the summer.

NIKE is going to sequester teams at that one site for the better part of two weeks, limit attendance, and essentially play kind of a summer season in one spot.

Look for Tennessee’s coaching staff to pretty much be camped out at the site for the duration of that event.

Rick Barnes was on Aaron Torres’ podcast yesterday and he pretty much confirmed what I had mentioned a couple times as far as roster management with the new transfer rules.

Said with 13 scholarships you aren’t going to be able to play everyone and keep everyone happy, and that it’s now easier than ever for guys to leave if they aren’t happy with their playing time. Said that he and the staff are totally on board with taking a project or 2 at the back end of those 13 scholarships and being transparent with those guys as far as what will be expected of them and the work they will need to put in, along with expected playing time etc.

I had mentioned this about Tamba when people have questioned that one, there are other reasons but he’s a guy who is very smart, gonna help with APR, gonna work head and be a good teammate, and has the measurable’s that there’s a solid chance he could very well develop into something down the line.

I think he ends up better than Kyle by his senior year (if he is still here)

I mean, going up against Fulky, Aidoo, ORN, etc. down low is going to help tremendously.

This is interesting because Gary Parrish said most coaches at the Peach Jam told him that they won’t take the projects anymore. They will only take freshmen that will play immediately and then look at transfers. But being transparent about it is the way to go to set expectations.

I don’t think you’ll see Tennessee as active in the portal as other schools, Barnes specially mentioned that too…said they won’t ignore it, they obviously took Powell this year, but that for the most part they want to evaluate guys and recruit them and try to develop them in their programs.

Part of what is happening is that CRB keeps improving the year over year recruiting results. The borderline players or projects see their opportunities diminish as each class gets better than the last. It will be interesting to see if the roster turnover reversed as classes plateau or decline. I can’t imagine a coach approaching 70 to continue outdoing the signing classes endlessly.

I think this portal year is an outlier in both football and basketball because kids get instant eligibility. I’m sure it will be bigger than previously, but not as crazy as this past year

The instant eligibility is in place going forward too…I do think it will lessen though as kids realize the grass isn’t always greener.

It’s once though, right? A player can’t transfer up or laterally every year? If so then it should start to settle down for the non-elite types.
Yes once…but every year you’re bringing in freshman who have never transferred…I get the thought that this is the first year it was allowed so a high % might have used that one time up already, I agree this year will be the highest for sure.

Once players see most transfers not resulting in vastly more opportunities coming from them, things ought to settle down. By transferring a player gives up a big advantage over newcomers in that they have a year of experience in the system.

I’ve done a 180. I now like the immediate eligibility rule with the one time cap. I guess a second transfer is allowed along with having to sit out a year? If that is a rule then it will eventually be challenged and defeated.

Seventy is the new Sixty, dontcha know?

Seriously, If he is in good health and the old fire still burns in the belly, then I don't see why not. I think CRB has a subtle little chip on his shoulder - he'd like to make everyone who trashes his tournament performance eat their words before he's through. I think that is one of his motivators.
