Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

None of the film I've watched of Key suggests he's a viable option to run the 1. I just don't see it.

He looks and plays like an undersized 3, which isn't necessarily a bad thing- I'm confident he'll at least be a productive player in some capacity, but running the point? I need some convincing. His assist/ TO ratio is gross
He was too burdened with scoring in that O from the one. Drew doubles most trips. Not a good formula for assist/TO. He also had 30 point scoring games. He’s not fast, but does have a decent handle vs pressure.

A good decision maker would use double teams to his advantage in terms of play-making. Grant was excellent at this, which made effectively double teaming him his jr year nearly impossible.

I just think there's a huge fundamental difference between handling the rock in a iso situation vs bringing the ball up against full court pressure, especially against elite athletes he won't be able to overpower like he did in the Missouri Valley.

I personally don't see Key being anything more than a solid 3&D spark plug off the bench, but I'd love to be wrong.

I don't think you can make the comparison between doubling a post vs. doubling a guard. It's an entirely different game plan. There's not much doubling in bringing the ball up court that isn't directly related to intentionally pressing, where you'd have help if they do it regularly.

The big difference in a true PG in Barnes offense vs. just someone bringing the ball up is when that person bringing the ball up, can also properly initiate the offense after bringing the ball up under pressure. There's a fine line between over-pursuing to the basket to set up teammates, and dribbling yourself into trouble without help. There's a pacing and observation of your team getting set up all while manipulating the defense and their positioning and doing so at dang near top speed that is very difficult. I think ZZ will take a lot of strides in this this year and be a fine starter, but I prefer a natural PG as a buffer between him and Santi/JJJ/anyone else currently on the roster. I'd like us to find an additional PG.

TBD. I was just saying a high scoring point guard who draws doubles is going to have TO’s. I don’t even know if he had two working shoulders. I’m hopeful that he’ll contribute.

Normally, no. But Tyreke does a lot of his damage from inside the high post, which is where he's typically double teamed- similar to where Grant drew his double teams.

Something I've noticed, is that very few people who seem to have concerns over ZZ and whatever issues he had, last year, have acknowledged that he came in late (August?) and that he will likely continue to improve his areas of weakness. If there is one position I have absolute faith in Barnes being able to coach up, it's point guard.

IMO, the issue that will always limit ZZ will be his size because he can't change that. His size isn't going to prevent him from playing PG, though. He can clean up the ballhandling. I am fine with him being the starter. My concern is that I don't want him playing 35 mpg at PG. We need someone else, either to start over him, or to spell him. I'm not particularly keen on the idea of that player being a true freshman. I think a lot of people take for granted that we had two freshman PGs log a lot of minutes, last year, with a lot of success, but that is certainly the exception and not the rule.

This.

Knowing that ZZ is going to play significant minutes is yet another reason why we should be looking for more size in the back court if we strike out on Hunter.

At this point it feels like Hunter is waiting until June 1st to see who sticks in the draft or comes back. I can't see any other reason to delay this long after his last visit is over.
If true, that means UT, if we're seriously in it with him, is a fall back option. Hope Barnes and Co. has a backup plan.
