Because I refuse to let some other fan start a game thread.

■ In Starkville, Miss., the Tennessee-MSU series is tied a 26-26. The Vols join Kentucky as the only SEC teams who do not have an all-time losing record in Starkville.

■ Mississippi State sophomore guard Jalen Steele is a Knoxville native and graduate of Fulton High School, where he was teammates with Vols freshman Galen Campbell. Steele has made 10 starts this season and is MSU's sixth-leading scorer.

■ The Volunteers won their SEC opener Saturday, beating 13th-ranked Florida 67-56 in Knoxville. Tennessee held the Gators to a season-low .357 field-goal percentage and a season-low 56 points

■ Forward Kenny Hall and guard Jordan McRae came off the bench for the first time all season Saturday and combined for 23 points as UT stretched its home win streak to five games.

■ Tennessee is shooting .503 as a team--including a .433 shooting percentage from 3-point range--in its eight wins this season.

■ On Dec. 23, five-star power forward Jarnell Stokes from Memphis, Tenn., signed with Tennessee. A consensus national top-20 prospect, Stokes will enroll for spring classes and will be eligible to play for the Vols upon clearance from the Southeastern Conference (he has been officially admitted to UT and cleared by the NCAA Eligibilty Center). Stokes turned 18-years-old Saturday.

■ Tennessee boasts the SEC's most conference wins dating to the 2005-06 season (66). Kentucky is tied for second with 63 regular-season SEC wins dating to the 2005-06 season.

■ Tennessee's January schedule features five games against current AP top-20 teams. Those teams boast a combined 52-11 record (.825).

The Mississippi State Series
■ UT has won the last six of the last eight meetings, including an 75-59 decision in it's last trip to Starkville on MSU's Senior Day ... The series is deadlocked at 26-26 advantage when contested in Starkville ... The Vols hold a 43-10 all-time advantage when the series is played in Knoxville ... 15 of the last 20 meetings have been decided by eight points or less ... The Vols and Bulldogs have met four times in the SEC Tournament, with MSU winning three times ... The MSU series dates to the 1924 season ... UT defeated MSU 20-17 on Jan. 15, 1924, in the first meeting between the two schools.

Tatum Closing In On 1,000 Points
■Fifth-year senior Cameron Tatum is 51 points shy of becoming the 44th member of Tennessee's 1,000-Point Club ... Entering this season, the Lithonia, Ga., native averaged 7.8 ppg in 104 career games as a Vol ... He averages 9.5 ppg this year and his 949 career points place him 10th among all active SEC scorers.

Stokes Makes Practice-Court Debut
■New enrollee Jarnell Stokes, a 6-8, 250-pound power forward from Memphis, Tenn., practiced with the Vols for the first time Monday ... After graduating from high school early (December), he signed with UT on Dec. 23 ... Though he has sat on the Vols' bench for the last two games, Stokes has not yet dressed out ... Head coach Cuonzo Martin said Stokes is not likely to play this week.

Thanks zjc! I also used to really dig whoever would put the game notes from utsports.com at the beginning of the game threads. I'm mobile, or I world do it...

These next two games, I'm looking for good defense and playing competitively. I think it's an awful lot to expect two wins coming up.

no i dont think anybody in their right mind should expect 2 wins coming up, as you said im just looking for competitive good hard nosed defensive basketball. i was just saying it is a huge opportunity, as was maui, for the team to play against some of the top teams and see where they are. if they win 1 game against one of these teams in the next couple weeks thats ranked highly then awesome, i just hope they win the games they should and grab a few suprises a long the way, and somehow get themselves into the tourney.

Watch the board fill up if we go 0-2.

which is why i said "in their right mind", cause it always does fill up after a loss but they are usually the completely unrealistic fans. it is ridiculous the way the mood and feelings change by the game on this board, it is seriously insane.

We can hope that this is a trap game for MS. They play arch rival Alabama on Saturday.
Really depends on which TN shows up.
If they execute a game plan like they did against Florida, play 40 minutes, control tempo and limit possessions they'll be in it at the end.
MS did lose to Akron (9-6) in Starksville early in the season. Of course they're playing a lot better now.

in my mind that is the biggest thing i believe for this basketball team. if they play good smart basketball, tough nosed defense, rebound well, and play more physical and out hustle the opposition they will be in every game. they may not win all of them, and to expect them to play that way every night is probably not realistic, but i think if they listen to ccm and play the defense he is expecting they will continue to surprise some teams.

MSU has the advantage as far as talent but I just don't think Stansbury can coach. I've watched MSU a couple of times (Baylor in Dallas, Arkansas and I think A&M) and they play selfish. Stansbury doesn't adjust and they rely on being more athletic than the other team.

IMO, we win this game as long as we stick to a game plan. If we run with State, they'll more than likely drill us. The slower the pace, the better chance we have in winning. 2nd chance points are major too. No surprise that MSU has a dominate big man that is a beast on the boards but he's not the smartest on defense. As long as there is no home cooking goin on, we should be able to penetrate enough to get 'em in foul trouble.

Looking forward to watching this one tomorrow. As stated earlier, I hope Tennessee plays like they did against Florida (except adjusting the game plan to fit Miss. State).

On a different note, I'm pretty surprised Tatum is so close to 1000 points. I guess he's played long enough to get there without having to be a spectacular scorer most nights though.

Awesome start to the thread OP, I enjoy early GDTs.

Get Maymon his touches, have good PG play from Golden, single digit turnovers. Here's a a good road win in the SEC!

UT has had some success in Starknaked. I don't think they will tomorrow night because Miss St will be hungry for a win after losing to Ark and they don't want to start off 0-2 in the league.

I feel like we have to throw Stokes out there for at least a couple minutes to see if he could surprise us. I mean I don't think it would be much of a drop off even if he isn't in the best shape right now. Especially with that huge starting lineup for MS with 3 guys over 6'8. I would like to see our big lineup with Woolridge at the 3 and two others between Hall/Stokes/Maymon.

I think some of it will just depend on how the game is going. This is a huge sec game for us and an opportunity to get off to a good start ccm will do nothing to compromise the game. If we have control of the game up about 12-15 I could see stokes getting a few minutes but if this game is close I wouldn't expect to see him at all.

I hope CCM watches the Baylor game over and over. Even though most of that game is because teams couldn't hit their shots and it was sloppy, Baylor grinded it out nicely and didn't let it turn into a fast past game, even though they probably have the players to keep up with them.
