Tennessee vs The Maxims vs The Coaching Change – 2012 Edition

Barnhill took over for Neyland while he was off in the CBI (China-Burma-India Theater) during WWII where he earned a Distinguished Service Medal (not to be confused with the Distinguished Service Cross for valor) and was promoted to Brigadier General. I also left out Harvey Robinson who coached the Vols through the 1953 and '54 seasons. Both, though, were members of Neyland's staff and very much disciples of the Old Man.

You're definately wrong about Haslem. Dude is worth well over 6 billion. Money was never an issue.

Listen, you overpaid waste of good classroom space, if the University didn't have a football program, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE A JOB. This holds for an Alabama, a Texas, a Southern Cal or a Notre Dame and virtually every college in the nation outside the Ivy League.

Chew on that.

The University of Tennessee, without its football program is Maryville College.

Somebody doesn't know a damn thing about the UTK budget.

Oh, yes I do.

What YOU are missing is that this transcends budgets. The ONLY reason the University of Tennessee has a budget in the $hundreds of millions is the legacy of the man whose name graces the stadium. Look it up, prior to 1926, UT was a poor stepchild and, yes, Virginia, was roughly the same size as Maryville College.

What Neyland did was to raise the University of Tennessee to a place where it became a symbol and source of pride for the entire state, something it had never been before. Not only that, this school in then-isolated East Tennessee began to attract student from across the state and other parts of the nation. This is exactly the same pattern which followed Rockne at Notre Dame. ND, minus Rockne, is Holy Cross. UT Knoxville, minus Neyland, is UT Nashville.

Given the extreme power wielded by the Crump machine in '30s and '40s had UT not been raised to national prominence in athletics through the efforts of Neyland and his players, most of the monies allocated by the legislature for post-secondary education would have been used to enhance Memphis State and other West- and Middle-Tennessee schools. Boss Ed, good Democrat that he was, would have had no compunction keeping UTK in Republican East Tennessee poor and small. No students = no six-figure job for nitwits like Cheek.

Let's see. The state legislature changed the name of it from "East Tennessee College" or something like that to "The University of Tennessee" in the 19th century, which sure doesn't seem like something you'd do for an irrelevant poor stepchild. The state legislature funded a graduate school, law school, and medical school to be established in Knoxville. (Not Maryville.) They funded a massive grant to construct Ayres Hall. All of this before Gen Neyland ever set foot in Knoxville. The arc of UTK becoming the state's flagship public university was well established before they got good at football.

I must agree that UTK admins at the moment don't seem to be as committed to the athletic dept as say Florida? Alabama?

That said I like who we got and I'm excited for the next couple of years to play out.

The "arc of UTK becoming the flagship" may have been established prior to Neyland, but I "think" OMG's point is that it did not really become what it is today without Neyland's success.

Brief History of the University

Excerpt from above link ...
"In 1879, the state legislature redesignated East Tennessee University as The University of Tennessee, the title under which it still operates. In requesting the change, the trustees hoped that the name change would inspire the legislature to provide some regular state financial support, but this generosity had to wait another twenty-five years."

Thanks, Poppa, I'd have needed too many syllables to convey that point. Nice work on the research side as well. Too many people think history started the day they were born.

One other factor that needs to be noted is that having a football team is a huge group to get donations from. Why do you think small schools such as Maryville college keeps a football team. These donations are not only given to the athletic side of the university, but also to the academic side. When the football team does well all of the contributions to the university increase. East Tennessee State dropped their football program a few years ago and now they are trying to re-start the program. They found out how much donations decreased once they dropped the program.

Excellent post! One thing though, I might be wrong, but I don't think Gruden gets money from EA. The announcers for this years Madden are the CBS Sports broadcast team of Phil Simms and Jim Nantz. Zero chance he would come here anyway because of his ESPN deal. Am I missing the boat completely on the EA reference? I am not trying to nitpick because again that was an excellent post, I am just curious.

OK, a few notes and responses.

The thing about Gruden and EA Sports came from my "brother from a different mother" who knows more about sports than even my youngest son - and that's saying something. He is generally right only about 99.999% of the time, so I tend to believe him.

Beyond that, the whole thing began to take on a farcical nature when earnest people would call into sports talk shows describing in detail seeing John Gruden in various venues throughout Knoxville. About the only one never mentioned was the Carousel Club and I'm sure if there were a gay sports talk show in town, someone would have seen him there!

In any event, I do sincerely appreciate all the kind comments and responses (and even those taking issue with things I've said) it makes this worthwhile.

I've already told Freak I'll be doing these again next year - "God willin' and the crick don't get too high."

The next Maxim report will be a recap of the 2013 Orange & White Game which marks the official beginning of the countdown to Opening Day.

See ya all soon and ...

GO VOLS!

December 24, 10:45PM:

In just a bit over an hour it will my honor to once again deliver the First Reading at Midnight Mass. It is taken from the Prophet Isaiah (9, 1-6) and is one of the best written pieces in the entire Bible.

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster
you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.
For every boot that tramped in battle,
every cloak rolled in blood,
will be burned as fuel for flames.
For a child is born to us, a son is given us;
upon his shoulder dominion rests.
They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
Father-Forever, Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast
and forever peaceful,
from David's throne, and over his kingdom,
which he confirms and sustains
by judgment and justice,
both now and forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!

A very Merry Christmas to all.
